Shahariar Sabuz ‘Ek sagor rokter binimoye, Banglar shadhwinota anle zara, amra tomader bhulbo na……’ By singing this song, Students of Jagannath University on 16 December commemorated the country’s heroes who sacrificed their lives during the Liberation War ’71. They along with their teachers and employees paid tribute to the martyrs by placing wreath of flowers on the foot of University Shaheed Minar. On the occasion, the whole campus turned into a festive look as it is not only an occasion of paying tributes but also a great occasion of celebrating country’s victory. Students and teachers of all departments came to the campus wearing colourful dresses that added special beauty with the as usual look of the campus. Boys and male teachers wore short panjabis in combination of red and green with jeans while female students and teachers wore colourful sharees and kamizes with a flower attached with their hair. The students also decorated their respective departments with hoisting flags in different corners, fastening colourful papers, baloons on wall and drawing alpona on the floor. It seemed that they were celebrating someone’s Birthday. Obviously it was the birthday of their beloved motherland in a sense. On the occasion of the 39th founding anniversary of Bangladesh, university administration and students of different faculties organised several celebrations including cultural programmes. At about 10 am, all the students, teachers and staffs gathered in front of the renowned sculpture of the campus “Muktijuddher Prostuti O ’71 er Gonohotta ”. After a while, Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. Dr Mesbah Uddin Ahmed joined the gathering and exchanged greetings with students and teachers. He also hoisted the national flag and university flag on the occasion. Later he led a colourful rally marking the marvelous day. The rally ended in front of the Shahid Minar after parading the whole campus. Later, discussions and cultural functions were held at the respective department premises while JnU VC Prof Dr Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, Deans of different faculties attended on the occasions and they also visited different departments. Some students also took part in the discussions and they express their feelings, mission and vision marking the significance of the day. JnU VC expressed his feelings in this way while attending the programme at the Department of English by saying, “Students, we are marching forward and you have to highlight our achievements to the outer world by Lingua Franca i.e English. In the mean time he also thanked the Chairman, teachers and the students for arranging such a cultural programme despite of the limited space.” Shahinoor Akter of English department expressed her feelings in this way, “Though we are now facing some problems as a developing country but ultimately we will be able to upright our head in the world within a short span of time.” Kaushik Ahmad of Economics department dreams of his country, He said; “There will be no violence among the citizens over establishing political supremacy and everyone will get his legitimate rights. Food, clothing, shelter, education and treatment have to be ensured for everybody. Poverty and corruption must be eradicated from the root.” Thus the celebrations continued till the sun set and ended with the oath of fulfilling the dream of the martyred freedom fighters- ‘Swadhin, Swonirbhor Bangladesh’.
