War and the Civilizational Process

War is instinctive. Human being has a natural tendency to fight. There is no period of peace and no period can be peaceful. When we see a relatively peaceful period it is in fact a period of preparation for another war. Human history is the history of incessant warfare. History is full of struggles among competing forces of interests. It is difficult to build a structure, it takes time to erect one but it takes seconds to destroy it. Modern warfare has become so sophisticated as to destroy the whole world within minutes. The level of sophistication will certainly reach the zenith and then collapse. We claim to be civilized as the word ‘civilization’ suggests. but it remains highly questionable as we have still continued to wage wars. Most wars are unnecessary and waged simply as a show of power. If one becomes a strong power, immediate fallout is its trying to control the less powerful. Conflicts become inevitable. The less powerful nations become implicitly or explicitly subjugated to the power. An empire is built in this way. It continues to control the territory under its control. But greed for power is not so weak to end here. The empire wants to be expanded. Now comes the question of who will rule the empire. Thus begins the phase of infighting in the ruling clan. The empire becomes weaker as the bickering continues. It becomes further threatened by another rising power. Finally it has to give in to the rising power. The rising power becomes another empire. This cycle of empire after empire continues. None but historical forces define the rise and fall of an empire. Our attempt at trying to influence the process is fruitless. We are merely a plaything in this historical process. We can not reverse any historical process. We can only be driven by these forces. It is really absurd to place or even to think side by side the horror, death and destruction caused by the darker sides of human nature and beautiful architecture built by the brighter sides of human nature. But the matter is these things coexist. It is very human being who builds libraries in Baghdad and destroys them cruelly. War can descend our status into one of lower than animals. The question is why war has survived so long and will survive forever. It has something to do with the environment in which we live. I do not believe that human being is bad by birth. Rather I strongly believe that We are inherently good. It is the surroundings that shape our behavior. However, the strangest animal on the planet is the human being. Individual distinctiveness is what characterizes this animal. Everyone has distinctive features that define his or her individual identity. The most common behavioral feature is self-interest. This often leads to greediness and exploitation. There arises a conflict what is commonly known as the conflict of interests. Thus war is caused to satiate unlimited greed for limited resources.
