The History of 'Weekend Update' Anchors on 'SNL'

When you tune in to the season premiere of Saturday Night Live on Sept. 28, "Weekend Update" will have a new face at its news desk: Cecily Strong.
The actress will co-anchor alongside Seth Meyers until February 2014 when he is slated to take over for Jimmy Fallon on NBC's Late Night.

Stepping into the role of a "Weekend Update" anchor is no small honor, as the segment is SNL's longest-running sketch. Strong follows in the footsteps of some of comedy's biggest names, including Tina Fey, Norm MacDonald and Amy Poehler.

Chase and SNL writer Herb Sargent founded "Weekend Update" in 1975. During his one-year duration as anchor, the actor coined multiple classic catchphrases, including his opening greeting, "Good evening. I'm Chevy Chase, and you're not."

After taking over the anchor chair during season 2, Curtin made SNL history when she exposed her bra in a hilarious bit about whether or not she was "sexy" enough to replace Chase.
Never breaking her signature deadpan delivery, we think she proved her point.

"Weekend Update" frequently mocked 60 Minutes' "Point/Counterpoint" segment, with Curtin playing the liberal and Aykroyd the conservative.

Murray joined Curtin in 1978, and together they served as the last "Weekend Update" anchors before SNL's five-year stretch without the segment.

After a five year absence, Lorne Michaels returned as SNL's producer, reviving "Weekend Update" in the process. Miller anchored the news desk for six years, the longest of any anchor to date. In the scene below, Miller sings a Christmas carol with the help of an unexpected guest: himself.

MacDonald started as anchor in the show's 20th season, opening each show with, "I'm Norm MacDonald, and now the fake news."

Addressing the abrupt change in his first episode as anchor, Quinn opened "Update" saying, "Have you ever gone to a bar and found that your favorite bartender was replaced with a guy named Steve? Well I'm Steve, what can I get you?"
He went on to host until 2000. In the clip below, watch Quinn perform his signature opening monologue for each week's segment.

Fallon and Fey became the segment's first anchor duo in 20 years. The two brought with them Chase and Curtin's signature closing remark, "Goodnight and have a pleasant tomorrow."

Poehler joined Fey after Fallon left to take on Late Night. As the first all-female duo, they made waves taking on feminist issues, including the use of the word "bitch" to describe Hillary Clinton during the 2008 presidential election.

After Fey left SNL to write and direct 30 Rock, Seth Meyers stepped in to anchor alongside Poehler. One of their most famous gags, titled "Really?! With Seth and Amy," featured the duo ranting about political and celebrity antics.

Meyers has anchored the desk alone since Poehler's departure from SNL in 2008. He has since brought on a host of new guests and characters, including the widely-beloved Stefon, the city correspondent with terrible taste in night clubs, played by Bill Hader.

If Strong is half as hilarious as she was last season as "That Girl You Wish You Hadn't Started a Conversation with at a Party," she will be a strong addition to the "Weekend Update" team.
