Sometimes, subtle changes can make all the difference.
Twitter updated its login page Monday, as first reported by AllThingsD, adding a little more explanation for those who aren't already avid users of the platform. The new look includes welcome text that reads, "Start a conversation, explore your interests, and be in the know." (The old text: "Find out what's happening, right now, with the people and organizations you care about.")

The updated login page also lost the large graphic image of a sunrise — or was it a sunset? — and now features smartphones displaying Twitter's mobile app. While it may be less visually appealing, the new landing page is more practical, explaining Twitter's functionalities and how people are using it (on their smartphones).
The hope is that Twitter can appeal to users not already using the site, a task that will become more important when the company goes public in the coming weeks. Twitter has experienced some significant growth over the past few years, including a 30% jump in users since last September.
The problem will be continuing to grow at that pace, and Twitter already stated in its S-1 that growing the user base will be a challenge, particularly in the United States where many people are already on the service. Getting those who are not currently familiar with the platform on board will be essential, and the new login could be a way of trying to do that.

The new design is also a small step toward a much larger redesign, which reportedly will be unveiled in the "not-too-distant future."
