Ask a Dev: What Are the Best Android Tutorials for New Developers?

Starting out as a new developer doesn't have to be overwhelming. The latest video in our Ask a Dev series takes a look at the best tutorials for aspiring Android developers.
Consulting architect Caldwell Shine suggests two resources for beginners: The Busy Coder's Guide to Android Development and books by The Big Nerd Ranch.

After selecting books to use, Shine encourages aspiring developers to set goals early. The first priority should be getting "Hello World" to work on your Android app, he says. Shine also recommends exploring other developers' apps, and trying to recreate ones that stand out as practice.
Talking to other developers can also help new developers learn how to build apps.
"Try and find some other folks who are also interested in the platform, so that y'all can geek out together and build something cool," he says.
In the video, above, Shine discusses how to root an Android phone. He recommends researching rooting on the XDA developers website, and most of all, he urges people to use test devices when rooting.
"Because if you break it, then you won't be able to take a call from Mom," he says.
