The Size of a Mason Jar, Sonos Play:1 Fills Entire Room With Sound

Sonos expanded its line of wireless speakers Monday with the introduction of the Sonos Play:1, a pint-sized speaker capable of producing sound that fills the room.
Sometimes described as the LEGOs of speakers, Sonos' products are designed to work with and complement each other. All of the speakers connect to your home's Wi-Fi network and can be used independently or combined with others to create stereo or even surround sound.

Music can be streamed to the speakers from your private collection, as well as services like Rdio, Spotify and Pandora. You can control the songs using the Sonos app on your computer, tablet or smartphone.
The company’s current lineup includes its flagship Play:5, smaller Play:3, a subwoofer and its most recent addition prior to today, a Playbar for your television. The Play:1 takes the place as the smallest of the bunch, and at $199 also the least expensive.
“It’s our most aggressive form factor delivering a great sound at our most aggressive price point,” Sonos CEO John MacFarlane told Mashable during a recent demo of the smart speaker.
The speaker represents a whole new look for the Sonos line, and is capable of pumping out some impressive sound.

Just because the Play:1 is small doesn’t mean it can’t pump out big sound. The speaker packs a custom designed mid-woofer and tweeter. While certainly a small package, the sound produced by the tiny speaker is anything but.
During our demo, the music from a single Play:1 could fill the room. When paired with another Play:1 and the Sonos Sub, the sound filled the entire home.
“We drive each of the elements in the speaker separately, so we can intelligently, based on how you want to configure the system, deliver the best possible sound we can so you’re getting the best experience,” MacFarlane saod.
He added that the Play:1 was designed with a form factor that makes it easy to fit throughout your home. Sealed architecture makes the speaker resistant to humidity, such as steam from the shower in your bathroom or boiling water on the stove while you’re cooking.
The Play:1 also adds a new button on top of the cabinet that can be used to pause your music by clicking once or skip to the next track by clicking twice. This functionality will come to Sonos' existing speakers via a software update on Monday, too.

“The mission of Sonos is to fill your home with music and bring that music from anywhere on the planet into your home, which is a unique opportunity," MacFarlane said.
One of the best things about Sonos’ line of speakers is that you can combine them to create the optimal sound setup for your space.
The Play:1 is ideal for your bathroom or kitchen. Two Play:1s paired with a Sub and the Playbar, however, can create a 5.1 surround sound setup in your living room beyond compare.
We spent a few days with the speakers and were fairly impressed by the Play:1's ability to handle different types of music and movie soundtracks with ease. If you're looking to get started creating your own system, the Play:1 could be a great first step. If you already own products from Sonos, it could also make an excellent addition to your existing setup.
The Play:1 hit shelves on Monday at Best Buy, Target and Amazon in white and black.
