IBM to Launch Cloud-Based Development Platform for Watson Supercomputer

Some of the wonders associated with IBM’s Watson supercomputer will soon be available to thousands of developers, thanks to the company's new cloud-development platform.
The new program will give developers access to Watson's application programming interface (API), a developer toolkit and educational materials. IBM's move is meant to encourage developers to create new Watson-powered apps.

“The idea here is that Watson isn't just for IBM. It's a technology we will share to fuel a new era of cognitive apps to fuel new businesses, products [and] services, and transform industries powered by cognitive technology," the company told Mashable in a statement.

IBM’s vision for the kinds of apps developers will build using its platform includes software that makes the retail experience easier by offering a “cognitive personal shopper” for users, as well as intelligent assistants working via the cloud or on your smartphone to offer health-monitoring services for chronic diseases.
Of course, the beauty of opening such a powerful API to the developer community is that no one can predict exactly what innovations will come next. By allowing developers to tap into Watson’s talent for intelligently parsing large chunks of data, IBM may be kick-starting an entirely new approach to app development for startups and individual app developers alike.
