Netflix: We'll Help You Survive Holiday Family Togetherness

Holiday togetherness is not everyone's cup of tea, but luckily, Netflix can help you escape.
This is the pitch in a new ad campaign from the video service. The inaugural TV spot in the campaign features a porcelain tree topper with the hard-boiled voice of The Sopranos' Lorraine Bracco. The tree topper has seen it all in 34 Christmases with the McDermott family, including a bowling ball that once came crashing through the ceiling and the year Aunt Ruthie burned the yams.

The tree topper rattles off a few more such moments — remember the time Uncle Luther brought fake snow? — before reveling in a fairly new holiday tradition: settling on the couch to watch Netflix.
The campaign, the first from new ad agency Deutsch LA, comes as the company hopes to reach consumers who are getting new electronic devices, tablets and smart TVs this holiday season. Such purchases fueled a strong fourth quarter 2012, in which the company added 2 million U.S. subscribers, double the previous quarter.
Netflix spent $160 million in advertising from March 2012 to March 2013, according to Nielsen.
