This year has hardly been void of chart-topping singles, which, especially in the U.S., were often accompanied by outlandish performances and accompanying chatter (ahem, Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke). And while a lot of air time and coverage may have made songs like Blurred Lines and Wrecking Ball some of the most talked about songs of 2013, they definitely weren't the most searched.

Instead, interest piqued across the globe for Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' Thrift Shop — and Same Love made an appearance in a few countries as well. Lorde's Royals popped up from seemingly nowhere and made the most-searched songs list for countries in the English-speaking world. Britney Spears looks to have had a pretty successful year, at least as far as search queries go, and PSY's musical reign is still spreading across the globe, though the U.S. is over him for now. In all, there were a few surprising takeaways from the data:
The only country song to show up on any country's most searched list is Florida Georgia Line's Cruise, and it was those in the UK and Canada who were searching for it.
Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber songs showed up in the results only twice, both in Italy.
The Harlem Shake was one of 2013's biggest hits in the U.S., but in France, the song is just finding its feet.
Get Lucky failed to top search queries in the U.S. — after all, it was booted as the song of the summer once Blurred Lines was released — but it did show up in the lists of five other countries. It only ousted Blurred Lines, though, in Italy.
