Box's iOS apps got a big update on Wednesday, bringing users new features, faster speeds and up to 50GB of free storage.
Upon downloading the Box 3.0 update, users will have their total storage raised to 50GB, five times more storage than the size currently offered to users on Box's free storage plan. (Box's premium storage plans, which range from 100GB to unlimited, cost between $5 and $35 a month.)

In addition to free storage, the update includes a complete redesign of Box's app. Wednesday's rollout includes a host of other improvements to the cloud storage service's app, including faster document rendering, real-time search, more sharing options and an improved UI.
The 50GB of free storage is available for the next month, until Feb. 15, to anyone who downloads the new Box app and creates a new account, or who logs into an existing account. Users with existing accounts who update from the previous version of the app will need to log out and back in order to take advantage of the offer.
The free storage, however, is not cumulative; it will bring users' total amount of storage up to 50GB, not give an additional 50GB. If you currently have 10GB of storage, for example, you will receive an additional 40GB with the update.
But that's still significant more storage than of Box's competitors. By comparison, Google Drive's free storage plan offers 15GB, Microsoft SkyDrive offers 7GB and Dropbox is 2GB.

Box's VP of Mobile David Still hinted that the update may be a sign of what's to come for Box's other mobile offerings.
"Box for iPhone and iPad is a critical foundation for our mobile platforms, as we continue to invest in bringing speed, simplicity and amazing content interfaces to our Android, Windows Phone and Windows 8, and mobile web products," he said in a blog post announcing the changes.
