The eyes of the world were trained on Sochi on Friday morning for the opening ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics, as awesome athletes prepared to perform heroic deeds.

Meanwhile, there was some quiet heroism back at home in the Heimlich maneuver stakes, from no less a personage than Clint Eastwood.

The legendary screen actor was chatting with Steve John, director of the tony Pebble Beach National Pro-Am golf tournament, at a party for the event on Wednesday night, according to local outlet The Carmel Pine Cone. Then John began to choke on a piece of cheese, and Eastwood sprung into action.
"I looked in his eyes and saw that look of panic people have when they see their life passing before their eyes," Eastwood told the Pine Cone. "It looked bad."
So Eastwood got behind John, wrapped his arms around him and heaved the man off the ground in a textbook Heimlich.
"I gave him three good jolts, and that got it out," Eastwood said. "And then I made him drink a big glass of water with a bunch of lemon squeezed in it."
Eastwood is an investor in the Pebble Beach Golf Links, which hosts the annual pro-am tournament that officially began Feb. 3 and draws top golfers and famous celebrities alike. From 1986 to 1988, Eastwood served as mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, the small, wealthy Northern California town where he lives near Pebble Beach.
John called the choking episode "as bad as it could have been," and told the Pine Cone he was grateful for Eastwood's help.
"Clint came up behind me and he knew exactly what to do," John said. "He did the Heimlich maneuver, and he lifted me right off the ground. He's strong! The cheese popped out, and I was fine."
