For Apple users with a 4K resolution monitor, you're in luck: the next OS X Mavericks update for Macs will reportedly bring Retina support to the high-resolution displays.
While running on what's referred to as a pixel-doubled resolution, Macs can now intelligently scale resolution for 4K displays in the same way they do for the current Retina displays in the MacBook Pro line. Previously, Mac users with a 4K display could view content on the high-res display, but with irregular scaling on some elements (e.g., tiny icons).

According to 9to5Mac, Apple rolled out its new OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 update to developers on Friday, with Retina scaling for 4K included. Mac users can set up their ultra-high-definition 4K displays to run the software at a pixel resolution (3,840 pixels) double what it is now, for a much sharper experience.
The move shows Apple (not surprisingly) has its eye on ramping up 4K monitor support for desktops and may be getting closer to launching its own external retina-level 4K display.
Apple introduced the term Retina back in 2010 with the iPhone 4, claiming the pixels in its high-resolution display were so small they are invisible to the eye at normal viewing distances. The concept has since made its way to other Apple products, including the iPad, iPad mini and MacBook Pro.
A tweet tipped to 9to5Mac from user KhaosT revealed he set up a Dell monitor to a Mac computer, thanks to MST (or multi-stream support) which lets you set up multiple displays to one computer device. According to KhaosT, there now exists can option for a user to select retina resolution for 4K displays, if they are running at 60Hz.

It reveals users can choose to either run the display at native 4K resolution or scale the experience.
