Rocksteady's third and final entry into the Batman Arkham franchise features the Arkham Knight, a brand new villain created with the team at DC Comics.

While the villain is the titular character in the upcoming next-generation Batman: Arkham Knight game, Rocksteady has been mum on anything beyond his name and likeness. During a demo at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco last week, reporters were treated to shots of him diving onto an unsuspecting Batman.

Rocksteady released these detailed screenshots of the game Thursday, including images of Arkham Knight, Batman and the Batmobile.

1. Next Generation Batman

   This Batman takes on a much bigger Gotham City than ever before, about 20 times larger than "Arkham City."

2. Batman is Back

   "Batman: Arkham Knight" takes place about 12 months after the events in Rocksteady's last title "Batman: Arkham City."

3. The Arkham Knight

   A rendering of the brand new, mysterious villain the Arkham Knight.

4. Arkham Knight Attacks

   The game's creators are still mum on this villain's purpose or origins, only that he seems to have beef with the Dark Knight.

5. Batman and Commissioner Gordon

   Batman is partnering with Commissioner Gordon again and also secretly his daughter Barbara, who some fans will know as Oracle.

6. The Batmobile

   Rocksteady said improved hardware means this is the first game in which fans will get to drive the iconic Batmobile.

Batman: Arkham Knight picks up about 12 months after the events in Rocksteady's previous Batman game, Arkham City. Scarecrow has threatened Gotham City with a WMD-style release of a toxic gas that will put all its citizens in a chaotic panic, unleashing their worst fears into their minds. As a result, the city has evacuated 6.3 million residents, leaving only the seediest to cause havoc and the police and Batman to control the chaos.

Rocksteady Brand Manager Dax Ginn explained that Arkham Knight's game world is about 20 times bigger than what fans saw in Arkham City. For this game, fans will be able to drive the Batmobile around an open-world Gotham City, as well as scale and glide from buildings.

The game will weave in the story of Scarecrow's plan that night with exploration and side missions such as upgraded Riddler missions familiar from previous games.

"We wanted players to experience Gotham on an epic scale," Ginn said. "The goal of this game, as all other Rocksteady titles, is to feel like you're really Batman."

Batman: Arkham Knight, which doesn't have a release date yet, will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
