Your Boss is Always Right

I believe in believing “Can’t you do a single thing without making a mistake?”, Adnan felt embarrassed to hear the words in front of his colleagues. Countless number of times his boss had made such comments with regard to his efforts. Distressed, humiliated, ashamed, unhappy, Adnan thought this should be the end of it. He was livid with his boss, “Why on earth doesn’t this guy leave me alone? What is his problem? I wish he was gone from my sight.” Does this kind of scenario occur, when you go crazy at work? Actually, we hate bad bosses and we don’t want them to be a part of our life. Research indicates that , 75% of the employees who quit a job, quit because of bad bosses. However, in reality, changing your perception, i.e., the way you see things, might well change the relationship with your boss. Let us shed some light on the issue to see whether there is really something we can do. “The boss is always right”. Accepting his decisions, except when he is doing something unethical, can help you and your career more than you could ever imagine. The notion is quite simple. When you work under a manager/boss he is the one who takes the lead. Realizing and accommodating to his way of work will make it more comfortable for you to work with him. In return it will help you gain his favor more often than not. ‘Obedience and reliability’ is the key. There was a boss who was very hard to deal with. Angry, stubborn, harsh – these were the adjectives his subordinates used to describe him. All of a sudden the juniors saw a change in him. A new recruit became his favorite. Ask why? That apprentice became someone who the boss could rely on. Meticulously, the entrant in that company realized it was always a better option for him to say ‘yes’ to his boss no matter what. Then at some point of time it happened that the boss was up open to take suggestions from him. Many of us might think, “Hey, I know more than my boss; why should I bother”. It is important to know that he is more capable and that is why he was made your supervisor. You are seeing the issue from your angle, but he might be seeing it from angles that you are not even aware of. It is really advisable not to point out his mistakes at work. Even, it is better not to feed them to your subconscious mind. If you bicker with him in your mind, think of him with frustration and hatred, it creates a mental distance with your boss as well. So when the time will come to gain more facilities and promotion from your work; it is highly unlikely you will find your name on the list. A proactive approach is all it takes. Your actions are more powerful than your complains. Find out your strengths and the ways you can help your manager’s needs in work. Try to respect him the way he is and wait for your time to come. If you can comprehend one of the most important secrets of your job description which is, ‘make your boss look good to his boss’ – chance is you will become his right man sooner than later. Figure out the way he wants his reports, presentations and projects. Eventually, your patience and persistence will help you jump up the ladder in your career. Making rational appreciation of your boss will always help you. There is no harm in praising the new shirt which suits him. Even admiring his competence is something that is appreciable. We all make mistakes. Actually, there is a tendency of hiding our mistakes from our bosses. It is always a wise decision not to justify the mistakes. Even there is no need to make excuses for the error. It is quite simple and fruitful to acknowledge the mishap to your boss and tell him about your willingness to correct your actions from now onwards. What will happen is he might get annoyed in the first place but surely he will start to respect your integrity. That might help you to become reliable and trustworthy in his eyes. The law of natural return says – whatever you want to gain, you have to deliver first. Therefore, if you respect your boss; you are bound to be respected and admired by your subordinates.
