The nation started observing a month-long mourning in remembrance of the painful memories of August 15, 1975 carnage when Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated along with most of his family members . Again, in this August in 2004 there was an attempt to kill Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina, the Awami League president and the prime minister, by launching attack with grenades. Though Sheikh Hasina, the opposition leader, narrowly escaped the attack, 26 people, including by Ivy Rahman, the Awami League women affairs secretary and wife of incumbent President Zillur Rahman, were killed in the 17 August, 2004 grenade attack, About 500 AL leaders and activists were injured.

At the fateful night of August 15 in 1975, the killers brutally murdered not only Bangabandhu, but also his wife Fazilatunnesa Mujib, sons Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and Sheikh Russell, daughters-in-Law Sultana Kamal and Rosy Kamal. Sixteen more dear and near ones of Bangabandhu, including his brother Sheikh Naser, brother-in-law Abdur Rab Serniabat, nephew Sheikh Fazlul Haq Moni and security officer Colonel Jamil were also not spared during the world’s most heinous terrorism. Bangabandhu’s daughters, incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, survived the carnage as they were in Germany at that time.

Awami League, various other political and cultural organisations have chalked out elaborate plans to observe the month reminding the countrymen particularly the new generation of the contribution of Bangabandhu in the history of the nation including its emergence as independent Bangladesh in 1971.The month exposes the nation every year to grief and sorrow as the country is yet to come out of the stigma because of the failure to punish yet the culprits of the carnage. The month-long programme began with a blood donation camp organised by Krishak League, an associate body of the party, at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum. Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the blood donation camp.

Various organisations, including Joybangla Sangskritik Oikya Jote, Bangabandhu Smriti Sangrakkhan Parishad, Awami Sangskritik Forum and Bangabandhu Shilpi Goshti have already announced their month-long programmes. Amra Suryamukhi will hold a discussion meeting on 'Culture Friendly Bangabandhu: Reality of Present Time' at Sufia Kamal auditorium of National Museum tomorrow evening. Bangabandhu Shilpi Goshti will start its mourning day (August 15) programme on August 2 through a discussion meeting and recitation session at its central office.

Bangladesh Awami Sangskritik Forum will begin its month-long programme through staging a mock hanging of the killers of Bangabandhu at National Press Club on August 3.Bangabandhu Smriti Sangrakkhan Parishad will start its mourning programme today. Amra Muktijoddhar Santan, an organisation of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad and children of the freedom fighters, announced to observe the month as "August: kashto O kalangker mash" [August: month of pain and stain]. To mark the 34th death anniversary of Bangabandhu, Joybangla Sangskritik Oikya Jote also organised a discussion at Silverdale High School in Wari yesterday.

Their month-long programme includes holding discussions, wearing black badges, condolence rally and recitation.
