A Shinning Prospect for the Next Generation

Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) professions are growing faster than any other profession on the earth. A student whose mathematical and analytical abilities are good and who is very much creative has every chance to excel in CSE professions. CSE graduates can choose career from many professional tracks. Among them software engineering track is the most prolific one. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, USA has projected software engineering as one of the occupations to grow the fastest and add the most new jobs over the 2006-16 decade. Software engineers held about 857,000 jobs in 2006 in USA. Employment of software engineers is projected to increase by 38 percent over the 2006 to 2016 period, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. This occupation will generate about 324,000 new jobs in USA, over the projections decade, one of the largest employment increases of any occupation. In May 2006, median annual earnings of wage-and-salary computer applications software engineers were $79,780 in USA while that was $61,317 of biological scientists. The middle 50 percent earned between $62,830 and $98,470. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $49,350, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $119,770.
In Bangladesh, start-up salary of a good software engineer is approximately Tk. 25,000/- per month. A mid level software engineer gets approximately Tk. 60,000/- per month. A top level software engineer gets more than Tk. 100,000/- per month. It takes only 5 to 10 years to become a top level software engineer. There are approximately 300 local and foreign software development companies, 75 Internet service providers, 12 large and small phone operators, and more than 50 local and foreign banks where the software engineers are in high demand. There are numerous public and private organizations that need a huge number of software engineers, computer engineers, and computer scientists. Bangladesh is considered as the next destination for offshore software development by many experts due to increased development cost and the shortage of skilled software engineers in India. Even some Indian offshore development companies are thinking to give software development work to Bangladesh under secondary outsource contract due its proximity to India. Several US, European, and Japanese companies have already started their offshore development center in Bangladesh. Recent developments in optical fiber communications inside and outside the country have been attracting the foreigners either to setup their own offshore development house in Bangladesh or to sign the contract to outsource their software development to Bangladeshi companies. Software engineers are already scarce and in high demand in Bangladesh. Looming development in the offshore industry will make a software engineer most demanded professional in Bangladesh.
Employment growth of CSE graduates in Bangladesh and abroad will continue as businesses and other organizations will adopt and integrate new technologies and seek to maximize the efficiency of their computer systems. Competition among businesses will continue to create incentive for sophisticated technological innovations, and organizations will need more software engineers to implement these changes.
Demand for software engineers will also increase as computer networking continues to grow. For example, expanding Internet technologies have spurred demand for software engineers who can develop Internet, intranet, and World Wide Web applications. Likewise, electronic data-processing systems in business, telecommunications, government, and other settings continue to become more sophisticated and complex. Implementing, safeguarding, and updating computer systems and resolving problems will fuel the demand for growing numbers of systems software engineers.
New growth areas will also continue to arise from rapidly evolving technologies. The increasing uses of the Internet, the proliferation of Web sites, and mobile technology such as wireless Internet have created a demand for a wide variety of new products. As individuals and businesses rely more on hand-held computers and wireless networks, it will be necessary to integrate current computer systems with this new, more mobile technology.
In addition, information security concerns have given rise to new software needs. Concerns over “cyber security” should result in businesses and government continuing to invest heavily in software that protects their networks and vital electronic infrastructure from attack. The expansion of this technology in the next 10 years will lead to an increased need for computer engineers to design and develop the software and systems to run these new applications and integrate them into older systems. As a result of rapid employment growth, job prospects for computer professionals should be excellent. Those with practical experience and at least a bachelor’s degree in CSE should have the best opportunities.
Undergraduate courses in CSE provide the students a firm, broad-based education, with a provision for a substantial amount of specialization. CSE courses provide the students with a solid foundation to meet the future challenges brought on by the rapid pace of technological changes in computation and communication, and prepare them for a life-time of learning and upgrading of skills.
Computer Science courses in CSE is concerned with the efficient application of computing technology, especially through the design of efficient algorithms and data structures, design methodologies and language paradigms. There is also an emphasis on the practical design of efficient and reliable software to meet given specifications.
Rapid advances in microelectronics and computer science have created a need for a special kind of engineer with the range of expertise to make use of this new technology in the design of computer systems and their real-time application in industry and commerce. Computer Engineering courses in CSE integrate knowledge from both computer science and electronics engineering, thereby ensuring that a graduate possesses the analytic skills of the computer scientist and the development and design skills of the electronics engineer. This is made possible by the unique combination of subjects from these two disciplines within the Computer Engineering course. The broad knowledge of programming and electronics coupled with the specialist skills in software and hardware interfacing will make the Computer Engineer immensely suitable for a wide range of positions within the IT industry.
There are overlapping topics in Computer Science and Computer Engineering, including computer architecture, networks, and information storage and management. The fundamental principles used by both disciplines are similar, as each recognizes the constraints imposed by existing technology and applications. The differences, however, are in the emphasis placed at the algorithmic and conceptual levels. Hence, the Computer Science course focuses more on software design and construction compared to the Computer Engineering course.
