Department of Computer Science and Engineering
Since introduction of Computer Engineering Department at BUET the department has maintained excellent in education, research and programming skill among its students. Students of this department participate in co-curricular activities and maintain excellence. This hurriedly written article cannot cover excellence in different fields in detail. The list of examples can only be thought of as glimpses of excellence the department has been able to achieve.
Research
CSE Students, in particular undergraduate students, have earned significant successes in getting their works published in international journals of repute. Some of the students, whose undergraduate research resulted in publication of papers in international journals of reputation are Prodipta Prometheus Mitra, Muhammad Arshad Ul Abedin, Rezaul Alam Chowdhury, Suman Kumar Nath, Tarique Mesbaul Islam, Mustaq Ahmed, M. Mannan, M. Ziaur Rahman, Md. Mostofa Akber, M.M. Islam, E. Amyeen, M Tanvir Parvez, T. Imam, Masud, M. M., Asif-ul Haque, M Saifur Rahman, Mehedi Bakht, Rajat Shuvro Roy, N.M. Mosharaf Kabir Chowdhury, Abul Hasan Samee, Rifat Shahriyar, Enamul Hoque, Atif Hasan Rahman, Muhammad Abdullah Adnan. Rezaul Alam Chowdhury attained the feat of publishing 6 papers from his undergraduate research, and before getting admitted into PhD program this figure rose to 10. Dr Md Saidur Rahman, now Head of the Department, has got UGC awards for research and a Gold Medal for Bangladesh Academy of Sciences. Dr Rahman has also received Funai Information Technology award. He is also a coauthor of a monograph entitled “Planar Graph Drawing” published by World Scientific. Dr. Reaz Ahmed, Assistant Professor, Department of CSE, BUET, has been awarded the 2008 Fred W. Ellersick Prize Paper Award, 2008. Dr. Md. Monirul Islam, Associate Professor, Department of CSE, BUET, has been awarded 3 awards on Joint 3rd International Conference on Soft Computing and Intelligent Systems and 7th International Symposium on advanced Intelligent Systems (SCIS & ISIS 2006). Professor Manzur Murshed, a graduate of our department, is now Head of Gippsland School of IT, and was an occasional Convocation speaker at Monash at an early age. Professor Murshed has the distinction of creating opportunity for about 15 of Bangladeshi graduates to continue with their doctoral studies in his university. Similar service is being offered to our department and country by Dr Latifur Rahman Khan of UT Dallas, Dr Zulkernine, now a faculty member of Queens University, Dr Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed of Marquette University amongst others. Currently Dr. Ekram Hossain, a graduate of CSE Department BUET, serves as an Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, IEEE Wireless Communications, and several other international journals. Our graduates have occupied faculty positions at Waterloo, Queens, Manitoba, UT Dallas, Monash, Marquette and other famous universities. Our graduates have been doing their higher education/research in prestigious schools like Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, UIUC, UT Austin, Yale, Purdue, UC Berkeley, ANU, King’s College London, Melbourne, Tohoku. Some of our students, like Munirul Abedin, got coveted MicroSoft jobs even before completing their undergraduate education.
Imranul Hoque and Sonia Jahid, two Level 4, Term 2 students of Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), BUET won the 3rd Prize in the Project Show for Future Engineers of "World Engineers' Convention 2004" held at Shanghai, China from November 2 to 6, 2004. World Engineers Convention (WEC) is considered as the Olympiad of Engineers and is held every four years.
Programming Contests
BUET students started participation in ACM ICPC programming contest from 1999, and in the very first attempt qualified for the world finals being champion of Asia regional Dhaka Site. Since then every year there is a team from BUET participating in this prestigious contest. Feat of participating in the World Finals of ACM ICPC for a period of consecutive 11 years or more can be claimed by only 8 universities of the world. BUET teams became champion at Asia Region Kanpur Site contest in 1999 and 2000. The first non-CSE student qualified for the World Finals is Mojahedul Hoque Abul Hasnat of EEE. Since then Sabbir Yousuf Sanny and Mohammad Mahmudur Rahman, also of EEE Department have participated in the World Finals of ACM ICPC. This contest is so popular that in the coming years we expect to see students of other departments qualify for the World Finals. In online contests organized by the University of Valladolid Bangladeshi students performed very well. In recognition of their feat 9 students were awarded an amount of Taka one lac each, of which 8 were from CSE Department BUET. Two students namely Rezaul Alam Chowdhury and Shahriar Manzoor occupied the topmost position in the ranking of a contest participated by thousands of students from around the world. Our graduate Shahriar Manzoor has been honoured as a Judge in the World Finals of ACM ICPC for the last 7 years. In recognition of the extraordinary feat of BUET team in occupying 11th position among 60 teams in the World Finals of ACM ICPC held at Orlando, Florida, USA, the Prime Minister of the country gave a cash award of Taka one lac to each of the contestants. Parliamentary Standing Committee of Education in its 20th Meeting congratulated BUET Team for this extraordinary performance.
