Master thatcher Set back from the busy main road in a glade behind a towering yew tree, the pale yellow 16th-century cottage could come straight from the pages of Snow White. And perched near the top of a ladder, leaning perilously against the front of the steeply pitched roof, is Dominic Meek, who is energetically stripping off the old thatch to reveal the "base coat" underneath – the layer of old straw that could easily be more than 200 years old. Mounds of it have been raked down and litter the pathway, while a tower of new straw – bundled up into "yealms" or large straw tiles that will go straight on to the roof – is about to be removed from a nearby trailer. Rolls of netting are lined up like a Tate Modern installation on one side of the garden. When the thatch is completed, Meek will wind the netting (designed to protect it from bird and vermin infestation) so tightly across the roof, it will be impossible to see except from close range.
