No absolutism but adaptivity! (Influenced by some finest minds) - There are advantages and disadvantages to both communist and capitalist systems. Unrestrained either is problematic, to say the least. Unrestrained, communism leads to stagnation. No personal incentive leads to no innovation. In the Soviet Union, there was official state-sponsored science that was utterly wrong. In the modern United States, the government is effectively being purchased by private interests that are effectively turning the vote (participatory democracy) into a farce. Nothing is immune to corruption. We have our marvellously idealistic visions of what the ideal state of unrestrained capitalism and perfect communism would look like. We often hear people on both "sides" saying things like, "Well true X has never really been tried." This is normally just a way of forever holding the idea immune to criticism. In an ideal world "true" communism eradicates corruption, encourages equality, a co-operative spirit, and well-being for everyone. In an ideal world, "true" capitalism drives innovation, creates wealth, and improves the lives of everyone. The answer to both of these idealized visions is the same: This isn't an ideal world. And this is true of all the idealized visions I have encountered. They invariably do not survive contact with reality. This is why I went to a couple of hindu groups to learn something of hinduism, despite how flawed an exercise that can be. I can read the sacred texts and learn about the idealized vision of hinduism, but that won't tell me what happens when the idealized vision makes contact with reality. To find that out, I have to look somewhere else. The same is true for islam or Christianity or what-have-you. And that is why I am an advocate of an adaptive vision, one that can change and adapt when it touches reality.
