DCC fails to clean animal waste

Please, keep urself at least 100 miles away from me !!!

Nasir Muzahid Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) has failed to clean up all wastes, caused by the mass slaughtering of sacrificial animals on the occasion of Eid till yesterday night though its high official earlier on the Eid day assured of removing all wastes from the capital by Friday. While visiting different areas on Thursday night and Friday, piles of garbage were found uncollected from many streets and lanes across the city, including the areas of Posta, Islambag, Azimpur, Paltan, Jagannath Shaha road and Dhanmondi. Some residents of these areas took the trouble to clean up the garbage themselves. Chief Waste Manager Bipin Kumar Saha yesterday told the reporters that removal of wastes from the cattle market is almost complete and hoped to complete the job by Friday morning. "We have already cleaned up the wastes of the cattle market and the removal of wastes from different corners of the city will be completed soon," he said. He further told that the cleanliness drive had been hampered due to the addition of huge amount of wastes on the second day of Eid-ul-Azha. However, the city accumulates over 18,000 tonnes of wastes during the Eid, which is around 4,000 tonnes on a normal day. Considering the huge work, the DCC had appointed some 12,000 workers to conduct the cleanliness drive with 200 vehicles. It had also cancelled leaves of all the officials and staff of the department. A monitoring committee had also been formed. Forty containers, 20 dumpers, 137 open trucks, 25 compact trucks, three prime movers, and two tyre dodgers were engaged in the removal activities while Fire Service and the WASA also assisted the drive. Meanwhile, some city dwellers have alleged that the monitoring was not sufficient and even, the appointed workers didn't perform properly. Otherwise, the wastes would not remain uncollected, they alleged. Earlier on Tuesday, a day before Eid day, while addressing a function at Gono Bhaban marking the handover of 100 waste collection vehicles by the government of Japan, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also expressed her dissatisfaction over the DCC activities of keeping the city clean.
