Is Anyone Normal???????????

Based on personality and behavior, people are categorized into two sections- normal and abnormal. It is really hard to describe normality and abnormality because different cultures as well as countries define these terms in different ways. However, there are some acceptable definitions for both terms as well as some characteristics including deviance, distress, dysfunction, infrequency and maladaptiveness that help to distinguish abnormal behavior from normal. Normal behavior includes dealing with the social norms, rules, and beliefs of a community (Normality and abnormality n.d, p 215). When a person performs and behaves satisfactorily in a typical way following the majority in a society and causing no harm to others accepting the stressful and distressful moments of life is also considered psychologically normal (Normality and abnormality p 215). Like normality there is no specific definition of abnormality or psychopathology. The literary meaning of abnormality is ‘away from the normal’ (normality and abnormality p 218). The more acceptable theory of abnormal behavior is when certain behaviors increase the death rate, suffering and also cause dysfunction, distress and loss of liberty (Ganepola 2009). It is also portrayed by discomfort, peculiarity and incompetence (Owusu 2009). Sometimes because of the weakness in personality, some people act abnormally (Normal and Abnormal 2007). The definition of normal and abnormal behavior is not enough to distinguish them from each other. The following criteria help to decide whether a person is abnormal or not. Normal and abnormal behavior can be differentiated by noticing whether an individual’s behavior violates the social norms or not. Almost each culture is designed with some specific standards of satisfactory behavior (Carruthers 2009). Therefore, whoever will deviate from the satisfactory behavior as well as makes others feel endangered or fearful, it would be defined as abnormal behavior (Jones 2007). For instance, most of the time psychopath individuals disobey the social norms and customs that make others feel frightened and discomfort; therefore, psychopaths are abnormal (Jones 2007). However, criminals and prostitutes that work against the social norms, but are not considered as abnormal because in some places they are now socially accepted. It means social as well as cultural norms can be changed over time. Thus, the definition of normality and abnormality also varied with these changes (Jones 2007). Personal suffering, involves the incidence of experiencing a certain level of pain as well as the desire of an individual to get out of that pain, is also used to determine whether behavior is abnormal or not (Chamorro n.d). If a person suffers from a great deal of torment or sadness can also suffer from severe distress. However, psychopath individuals often behave abnormally, they are not distressed enough. Often without practicing regret or culpability they disobey the rules (Jones 2007). On the contrary, some happening in our life can bother us like having a baby, being hungry but still it is under normality (Jones 2007). A certain level of dysfunction in human life also helps to differentiate the normality from abnormality. Dysfunction or disability means in some significant stages of life including study, work or relationship when a person seems to be impaired or disordered from their typical pattern of activity (Jones 2007). The incidence of failing classes continuously for a talented student and altering jobs consistently without any reason are some examples of behavioral dysfunction (Abnormal-deviating from 1999). Infrequency among the people can be used to clarify whether a person is normal or not (Jones 2007). People are evaluated based on their height, weight and intelligence. Majority of the people are placed on the middle range (Behavioral Disorders n.d). Only some are exceptional with extreme intellect and other qualities or behaviors which could be categorized as abnormal (Behavioral Disorders n.d). If 3% of the entire population in a specific country has very low IQ, then these 3% population would be classified as abnormal. On the other hand, if same percentage of the population has very high IQ, then they are entitled as normal (Jones 2007). Lastly, behavior would be abnormal when it hinders the individual’s operation or growth, or it leads to severe distress (Normality and abnormality p 218). Such as, committing suicide is an abnormal behavior (Behavioral Disorders n.d). Moreover, behavior is regarded as maladaptive when it disrupts the well being of a social group for a long time. The way criminal behave does not seem to have a harmful effect on them, however, their behavior affect others in a society (normality and abnormality p 218). In conclusion, people with normal behavior exist in a society. Those who can adjust with the society are normal. On the contrary, the people who do not fit with the majority are always pointed out as abnormal. Almost everyone has their uniqueness that could be considered as either normal or abnormal to others. Whoever is intelligent he or she conceals it from others and tries to conform to the majority. However, some people could not hide their exceptionality; therefore, others mark them as abnormal. Thus, no one is perfectly normal in this world which seems to be an acceptable theory.
