You have a good voice.
Thank you.
Where did you learn to sing?
By imitating Michael Jackson.
1996
Why don’t you be the vocal for the competition? You can imitate Jackson pretty well. I think you will be good.
Really? Ok let me try….
I envied my dad’s generation, because it seemed they have taken everything that is good and royal in terms of music, sports and revolution. They had Elvis, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Abba, Pele, Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, the 71 war. But as my growing up progressed, so did the realisation that I also had, in my generation, royalties in sports and music.
I had Michael Jordan, Maradona, and George Hagi.
And I had Michael Jackson.
In 1983 in an Eid special programme in Bangladesh, the government owned BTV showed Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat it’ and ‘Thriller’, and the special effects that went behind the making of Thriller. Beat it was the first ever song in my cognitive life (arguably, ‘Beat It’ is the most listened to international song in Bangladesh. everyone listened to it with or without an understanding, and there were rumours that shepherds in villages used it to steer their cows!). I fell in love instantly, without understanding what he was singing, of this song. My dad saw it, and on one birthday gave me one of the greatest gifts in my life; two mixed tapes containing Jackson’s ‘Off The Wall’ and ‘Thriller’. Every night I used to listen to those in my dad’s newly bought JVC cassette player. I picked up the wolf’s howl from thriller. I taught my closest friend Rubel how to do it. He tried it in his house, and his father who mistook it for a dog’s howl. He told both me and Rubel off, stating it was bad luck. I remember when Bad came out, BTV showed it as a headline in its evening news.
I went to Cadet College emulating my cousin, and Jackson brought out dangerous. My friend June was living in Old DOHS in Dhaka, and he played his CD when I went to see him.
I had the best album of my life.
Tracks 7, 8, 9 and 10 were all I listened to all day, every day. So much so that I started actually singing in his voice, with the trademark short burst of screams. A friend of a friend of mine showed the moves of thriller, and I started to learn dancing as well.
The Inter Cadet College Cultural Competition in 1996 was drawing near. By that time, I have learnt to play a few chords and when pushed, a few pieces on the keyboard. Our class formed a band for the competition. June was our leader, and he was trying out vocals. After our main vocal Sufian backed down, he turned to me and said, “Well, I hear you singing Jackson in the shower. Do you want to give it a go?” I was a bit taken aback, and I said, “OK.” That was it. From there I had my first taste of stardom. Cadets, juniors and classmates alike, respected me as a powerful vocal. I took this short fame to university, and in a small gig among friends, was picked up by the leader of a professional band called Faith.
I remember I was crying like a little girl when I heard childhood. I felt a sense of kinship with him, his anguish of not having normalcy in his life. That was when I realised that I love Michael Jackson in the word’s truest sense, I felt for him. Little Susie was another song that made me cry. My friend Junaid was an even bigger fan than I ever was, I suppose, because he refused to believe that Invincible was not a good album of Michael Jackson
I can now play chords on a guitar, I can now sing many rock songs, I openly express my disliking for rap and hip-hop, but my teacher was a man who came from the background that produces hip-hop, R&B and Rap. He actually never knew how many people he taught to perform and sing. Including me, a young boy from Bangladesh.
My life’s greatest miss is probably never to be in a Michael Jackson concert. When I finally had the opportunity, the opportunity went away.
This is not a summary of what Jackson has accomplished in his life; this is a summary of what he has done to mine.
Michael Jackson, I was, I am and I will be forever your student, your fan and one of the many millions who cried when you did.
RIP.
