Sitting in my office, sipping a cup of coffee and waiting for my supervisor to give me something to do, I was reading a book about dreams last thursday.
The title of the post is a question that has been raised by prominent wirter John Maxwell. After reading his question, I started thinking. According to Chris Hodges, "a dream is a compelling vision you see in your heart that's too big to accomplish without the help of others."
After a lot of thinking I realised how right they were in believing that you cannot accomplish your dreams alone. So,once again, sitting in my office, waiting for my supervisor and having nothing to do, I thought of sharing this with all of you. ]
You need others to help you. In the last 22 years of my life, whatever dreams I have had, none of them could have been fulfilled without the help of others. The list of people who have contributed in making my dreams come true are long. Some have supported me. Some have helped me. Some have inspired me. And some have embraced my dream as if it's their own. Each and everyone of them have made a difference in my life. Each and everyone of them have influenced my life. Each and everyone of them have helped me grow. Each and everyone of them have added meaning to my life. And I can never ever thank them enough.
So, as Maxwell has said, if you need to realise your dream, you need to make a team. Now, of course, making a team is not making a team in the literal sense of the word. The team will be in your mind. And it will consist of the people you have enlisted to help you accomplish your dream. For many people this may seem strange because it usually does not occur to us that we need the assistance of others to achieve our dreams. In fact, I understood the significance of it only recently.Whenever, I have achieved a certain something,I have been happy and grateful to others for helping me out. But that has been a natural process.I had never designed it that way;never made a team in my mind before.
So, the next question comes,if I make a team, which people should I include in it? Mainly three types of people need to be included in your team.
1. People who inspire you
2. People who are honest with you
3. People whose skill complement yours.
We all need people to cheer us,encourage us and make us feel that we can achieve whatever we want to. These people boost our confidence in ourselves and thus contribute in making our dreams a reality.
Secondly, we need people who can give us constructive ideas. We need people who can point our mistakes to us, who can contradict us and hence, show us a better path. Many may feel that it is contradictory to people who are inspirational, but it is not so. We all make mistakes,we all get carried away. We need people in our lives who can keep us on the ground, who can give us a reality check once in a while by being honest with us and giving their honest opinions.
Finally, none of us can do everything. We all specialise in different things. So, in order to make our dreams come true we need people who are skilled in areas other than our own. They can give us advice that we cannot develop by ourselves.
But it is important to remember that we are all different. Our nature, our outlook of life, our temperament are different. Thus, we should select our team members according to our basic characteristics.
You may need only one other person to make your dream come true. Or you may need a large number of people in order to make your dream come true. Remember that, the bigger your dream, the more people you need to turn it into a reality. So, "connect with them, invite them in,transfer the vision and turn them loose"( Maxwell,2009).
