Al Gore Declares It's Time to Put a Price on Carbon

The year 2012 was the hottest year in the recorded history of North America, and the past decade was the hottest decade ever measured globally. We have seen the negative effects of climate change firsthand, whether it's the melting Arctic ice cap, wildfires across the western U.S., record floods in Colorado or Superstorm Sandy.
If we want to build a better world within the next 20 years, former Vice President Al Gore says that climate change is our biggest challenge.

To a crowded auditorium eager to hear him speak at the Social Good Summit Monday afternoon, Gore announced this year's 24 Hours of Reality event, taking place Oct. 22 to 23, to identify the costs of carbon pollution and the solution that can "change the course of our future."
"Mother Nature is speaking up loudly and clearly," Gore says. "Will the world be played for a fool again? I don't think so. I think that we are right at a political tipping point, because people are hearing from their parents and grandparents and elders that it's never been like this before."
According to Gore, we put 90 million tons of carbon pollution into the atmosphere every 24 hours. The accumulated amount of manmade global warming in the atmosphere traps as much heat every day as would be released by 400,000 Hiroshima bombs. That, Gore says, is what raises both the air temperature and the ocean temperature.
The Climate Reality Project, the movement Gore started to work toward fixing the climate crisis, aims to provide hopeful solutions. Every year, Climate Reality hosts a 24 Hours of Reality event, during which the team travels the world to measure climate impact. This year's initiative hopes to hold those who pollute accountable, rather than putting the cost on the general public.

"We are already paying the price of carbon, so it is high time that we put a price on carbon. The course of civilization between now and 2030, and beyond, is going to be shaped by us," Gore says.
"It is simply not acceptable for major companies to mimic the unethical strategies of the tobacco companies in presenting blatantly false information in order to protect a business model. We have to put a price on that denial ... We need to let the polluters pay that price."
The Climate Reality Project and 24 Hours of Reality plans to bring people together from around the world — economists, scientists, doctors, nurses, et al. — to figure out real solutions.
Gore urged the Social Good Summit community to take part in this conversation.
"Mention the elephant in the room," he says. "Speak up!"
