WABC reported that five of the train's seven cars went off the tracks, and two flipped onto their side, close to the Harlem River.
Firefighters had to smash through the glass on several cars to rescue passengers.
One passenger on the train, Frank Tatulli, told WABC that he rides the same route every Sunday, and the train was traveling faster than it normally did.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and the National Transportation Safety Board are currently investigating the accident.
