This Art Project Aims to Draw the Internet

Ben Redford, a designer from the United Kingdom, wants to draw the Internet.
However, his project, funded on Kickstarter, isn't just about getting people to donate cash — he wants them contribute ideas for the artwork, too.

For one dollar you can submit your image idea to be included in the finished 24-inch by 36-inch piece called "Internetopia."
A buck buys you one square cube, two dollars gets you two cubes, and so on, meaning your request will fill as many cubes as you pay for. Contribute at least $50 and Redford will ship you the final product.
The cubes don't have a definitive size yet because the artist has received so many requests that the project continues to expand, and Redford knows that he will have to shrink his drawing to fit the intended poster size.
Although he only asked for $2,000, as of this writing, Redford already has over $7,100, and there are still six days left to pay to submit ideas on the Kickstarter campaign site.

"This presents an interesting dynamic whereby the more people [who] get involved in the project, the smaller the cubes on the final image will be," Redford told Mashable in an email. "However, the overall level of detail of the poster increases. I'm curious to see if people are more interested in the size of their own request, or the entirety of the final image as a whole."
Redford says the idea for "Internetopia" stemmed from his time in grade school.
"When I was about thirteen I started doodling on the back of my English exercise book in class," says Redford. "My biggest hurdle was what to draw next, so I started asking my classmates if they would like to add something to the drawing."
Later, as he started to spend more time on the Internet, he wondered what it would look like if the web were a physical place. But he couldn't get past the ugliness of all the ads he saw, so he started to take requests instead.
"I suppose this project is a long awaited extension of these two influences," says Redford.
The artist plans to complete and ship his drawing sometime in February of 2014.
