Here is my list of best movies that came out in 2013. As I
watch more films this list will be updated.
1.12 Years a Slave: Based on a true story this is
probably one of the best movies on slavery. Certainly
better than Django unchained (2012).
2.Gravity: A 3D Sci-Fi Thriller from Alfonso Cuaron. Excellent direction and cinematography. Sandra Bullock pulls it pretty well – almost singlehandedly.
3.The Act of Killing (2012): A masterpiece. Goes deep
into the mind of Anwar Congo, a gangster who himself
killed around 1000 people (communist or alleged
communist) in 1965-66 with supports from the then
Indonesian regime. The killers never faced trials and
now they lead a good life.
4.Blue is the Warmest Color: The movie is too pink!
Refreshing and very well directed movie about
relationship. Best Film, Cannes, 2013.
5.American Hustle: A crime drama directed by
David O. Russell. Thoroughly enjoyable.
6.Before Midnight: Another ‘Midnight’ installment from Linklater after 9 years. Very charming.
7.The Great Beauty: A very Felliniesque movie.
8.No (2012): Shot on Beta Cam, this movie shows a
never-heard-of story behind the fall of Pinochet.
9.The Spectacular Now: A coming-of-age drama which
is very different from a typical movie of the genre.
10.Stoker: A beautifully shot Hitchcockian thriller
(influenced by Shadow of a Doubt) from Park
Chan-Wook. It is the South Korean director’s debut English-language film.
11.Side Effects: After a long time Soderberg
generates something interesting enough to watch.
12.Mud (2012): A good one from Jeff Nichols.
13.The Hunt (2012): A Danish drama that reminded me of William Wyler’s Children’s Hour.
14.Wadjda (2012): An average movie which is special
because it came from Saudi Arabia and is directed
by a female.
15.Child’s Pose – Golden Bear, Berlin Film Festival. I think the movie failed to treat the touchy subject matter properly.
16.Frances Ha (2012): A pretty good indie comedy
starring my favorite Greta Gerwig.
17.Ain’t them Bodies Saints: The story is typical but a good attempt by the director.
18.Post Tenebras Lux (2012): Won the best director award in the Cannes in 2012. Excellent cinematography. It as a weird art film even by an art film’s standard.
19.Fruitvale Station: I would say this is the best debut
film by any filmmaker in the last year.
20.Enough Said: A good film especially for middle-aged
people.
21.The World’s End: A sci-fi comedy. Probably a good movie for the younger generation.
22. Don Jon: Funny and worth the time.
23.The Unspeakable Act: A movie that deals with a
very delicate issue. Good direction.
24.Drug War (2012): A typical action movie from
China-Hong Kong. It has little twists that are not totally
unpredictable.
25.Like Someone in Love (2012): A dud from Abbas
Kiarostami.
26. Bastards: A boring thriller by Claire Denis.
27. Upstream Color: Critically acclaimed but for me it was
a bad viewing experience.
28. Spring Breakers (2012): I understand why some
people say that this is going to be a cult classic. But
frankly, I did not like it.
29.The Grandmaster: Another disappointment from
Wong Kar Wai.
