LAS VEGAS — LG G Flex, the first curved phone with a "flexible" display, is moving out of the lab and into U.S. markets in the first quarter of 2014.
News of the large and rather unsual 4G smartphone broke late last year. Mashable even got some hands-on time with it (and competing curved handset from Samsung, the Galaxy Round). Along with a bendable screen, the large handset features a 720P OLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 mobile processor, 2 GB of RAM and a 13 MP camera.
Frank Lee, President of LG Canada, told a crowded auditorium at CES in Las Vegas that the 6-inch display device will arrive on AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint. He did not reveal a price.
Sprint's VP of Product Management David Owen also took the stage, revealing that he's been carrying the device for a few weeks. He said he's seen mobile devices with flexible displays in the lab for years, but this is one of the rare occasions when an experiment actually made it out of the lab "and into consumer hands. I've never had a device where so many people stopped and ask about it," said Owen.
The South Korean electronics company also showed off its stunning, 105-inch curved Ultra HD TV. LG calls it a World's First, and while LG announced the product late last year, seeing the 21:9 set in person is another matter altogether.
Perhaps the best news, though, is that media companies are preparing to deliver 4K-ready content for these ultra-high-resolutions sets. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced his service's support for 4K content and that the critically-acclaimed series House of Cards will be 4K-ready.
Lastly, TV Host and Designer Nate Berkus took the stage to announce that he is now LG's s Artistic Advisor and Ambassador for LG's Studio line of Kitchen Appliances. Do with that information what you will.
