Why Zimbabwe Walked Before Chile at the Opening Ceremony

Finally, Zimbabwe gets its moment in the Olympic sun.
During Friday's Winter Olympics opening ceremony, athletes from 88 nations marched into Sochi's Fisht Stadium, waving their country's flags high above their heads.

In keeping with International Olympic Committee standards, Greece was the first to walk in the Parade of Nations, and Russia, the games' host country, walked last. Other countries participating in the Winter Games entered alphabetically in accordance with the Russian alphabet.
But for folks unfamiliar with the Russian language, the parade order may have seemed uncharacteristically disorganized. Zimbabwe, typically the second-to-last country to march, was the 26th country to enter the stadium. Chilie, however, marched at number 82, whereas in 2012, they entered the Summer Olympics at number 41.
And although countries beginning with the letter A still lead this year's parade, language discrepancies meant nations like Azerbaijan and Australia entered before Andorra and Albania.
Nations like Hungary and Hong Kong, whose leading letter has no equivalent in the Cyrillic alphabet, are instead organized in accordance with their Russian translations. Hungary was the 18th country to march, and Hong Kong was the 22nd.
This year's Winter Olympics are the first time since the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics that the order is upset.
But Zimbabwe shouldn't get too comfortable in the lead— the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Brazil will mean a return to the Latin alphabet.
