When you’re human you have several desires; once you’re a vampire you crave only blood, you want nothing but blood.

Strange title? Slightly, but the title resembles a metaphor for a feeling that overcomes you when you fall into the beautiful but deadly emotion that is love.

What even is love? It holds several different meanings though it is a universally felt emotion. Love is defined as ‘a strong feeling of affection’ by the boffs who wrote the Oxford Dictionary. A strong feeling of affection??? Is that enough to really grasp what love is? The love between two partners? A husband and wife? A mother and her child?

No. It is not enough. Love is one of the strongest forces a human can feel, and a damn hell of a lot to reckon with. It can change you, make you excel and sometimes cripple you. Love is a dangerous game; played by many, won by a few. Romantic love takes over your life to the point that you are not yourself anymore you are “us”. Everything you do has some relation to your “better half”. You spend ages thinking “what will they think if I do this? How much do they love me?” and so on. Love takes over your mind, body and soul. What started off as lust turns into infatuation and then comes the downfall: Love.

Now, I may sound like some bitter old rejected bint but I assure you, I am not, far from it in fact. I’m one of the rare few who still believe in the sanctity of love, relationships and marriage.

However I have seen the effects that love has on people. Love is beautiful; it is pure. It can change you into someone new; make you do things you would never have done before and open your mind up to new experiences. Love allows you to open up and confide in someone in a way that you were unable to do before. You never find yourself alone because that person is always there, whether in person or over the phone.

It is like taking a dose of heroin, you become addicted, infatuated, absorbed in the other person. You hold onto every word they say, every move they make, falling deeper and deeper into love. Suddenly their goals become entwined with yours, you imagine a life with one another, a future; a home. You think of nothing but them, they have become your life and you develop a fear of losing them.

That is when the title “When you’re human you have several desires, once you’re a vampire you only crave blood, you want nothing but blood”, begins to make sense.

When you are in love all you want is them, when you are single you have so many wants. You want them and only them. You will do anything; go to any length in order to keep them in your life, as yours forever. That is when love becomes dangerous.
