A Look Back at Flickr's First 10 Years

Facebook isn't the only Silicon Valley tech company celebrating its 10th anniversary this month.
Flickr, the photo-hosting platform owned by Yahoo, turned 10 years old on Monday, a significant accomplishment in the ever-changing world of consumer tech.

In many ways, Flickr was ahead of the game: It focused on user photos before most Americans started carrying around high-quality cameras everywhere they went, and it offered free cloud storage before services such as Dropbox, Box and Google Docs were even invented. Flickr users upload a million photos each day, and over the past year, the service has been busy adding more features, including larger storage, filters and photo books.
The free storage shouldn't be overlooked. Flickr started offering users 1 TB of free storage last May, and also unveiled a website redesign. In comparison, Dropbox gives users 2 GB of free storage, and Box offers 50 GB.
Here are several other key milestones in Flickr's first decade:
Feb. 10, 2004: Flickr launches at the O'Reilly Emerging Tech Conference in San Diego, Calif. by co-founders (and husband-and-wife team) Stewart Butterfield and Caterina Fake.
March 20, 2005: Yahoo acquires Flickr for an undisclosed sum (TechCrunch reported $35 million). Butterfield and Fake remain at Yahoo for three years until both leave the company in 2008.
Nov. 2007: Flickr announces 2 billion total photo uploads on the site. That number jumped to 5 billion in Sept. 2010, which then turned into 6 billion in Aug. 2011.
Sept. 2009: Flickr goes mobile, adding its first iPhone app (Android didn't arrive until two years later). Mobile is an area that Flickr has revisited in the past year, launching new versions of both its iOS and Android apps, including new filters and tools such as auto-straightening.
Feb. 10, 2014: Flickr turns 10 years old, and encourages users to share their 10 favorite photos from the past decade on the site, using the hashtag #Flickr10.
