In Norway, Reindeer Sprayed With Glow-in-the-Dark Paint to Save Lives

Look out for Rudolf the reflective reindeer.
In an effort to cut down on reindeer deaths, a Finnish organization is testing the effectiveness of a reflective spray that will make the animals more visible to drivers, according to the Finnish Broadcasting Company.

Some regions of Finland remain dark for long periods of time during the winter when roads are particularly icy, making it difficult for motorists to notice the creatures.
"Reindeer graze free in nature and are quite often hit by cars," Anne Ollila, head of the Reindeer Herders' Association, told Mashable. "We want to find solutions to avoid this."
The spray, which will glow when a car's headlights shine on it, can be coated on a reindeer's fur or antlers. The association is currently testing how it will fare in different types of weather and which parts of the animal are most effective to spray. Antlers are the best bet since they're more visible than other options, Ollila said.
Others believe the spray might actually be a detriment to drivers.
Approximately 4,000 collisions with reindeer occur on highways in Finland's northern regions, Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat reports. Past attempts at reindeer safety have included the use of reflective collars.
