5 Things You Missed at the Mobile World Congress So Far

As we anxiously await the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone coming out of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this afternoon, manufacturers such as Nokia and Sony have already unveiled the latest products in their lineups.
Here are five major things you might have missed from the first morning of MWC, which was overnight in the United States.

Just before Nokia's phone business officially becomes a part of Microsoft, the company launched an Android-based smartphone called the Nokia X. The device is a budget model (about $120) aimed at emerging markets. Similar to Amazon's take on the Kindle Fire tablet, which stripped the Google presence from the Android platform, the Nokia X replaces Google services with those from Microsoft and Nokia. The design is also similar to what you might find on Nokia's Lumia phones.
In September, the companies announced Microsoft would be acquiring Nokia's mobile division and patents for $7.2 billion.

Just one year after launching the Xperia Z, the first model in its Xperia series, and four months after debuting the Xperia Z1, Sony introduced a new flagship device: the Xperia Z2.
All three devices are strikingly similar in design with monolithic black rectangles, silver wake-up keys and volume buttons on the right side. If it weren't for the difference in size (the Z2 is 5.2 inches while the Z and Z1 have 5-inch screens), one could easily confuse them. But the Z2 is significantly updated on the inside with a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a 20.7-megapixel camera with a 1/2.3-inch image sensor that can capture 4K videos, 3GB of RAM and a 3,200 mAh battery.
Meanwhile, Sony launched a 10.1-inch Xperia Z2 Tablet, a powerful ultra-thin, waterproof device. The tablet is just 6.4mm thick, significantly thinner than the 7.4mm iPad Air. The specs include a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, Adreno 330 GPU, 3GB of RAM, an 8.1-megapixel camera, a 6000mAh battery and a full HD screen.

In addition to the new smartphone and tablet, Sony also introduced its SmartBand SWR10, a waterproof wearable that tracks what you're doing around the clock. The device notifies you of calls, messages and tweets by vibrating; it can also be used to play music and games and monitor your sleep cycle. The SmartBand SWR10 can be paired with a phone via NFC or Bluetooth, and combined with Sony's upcoming Lifelog app.

Technically, the Samsung Gear 2 arrived on Saturday, but we'll give you the full rundown in case you missed the big news. Samsung launched the much-anticipated Gear 2 (above, right) smartwatch ahead of the show, but brought a friend along for the ride: the Gear 2 Neo (above, left). A main difference between the two is that the Neo doesn't come with a camera, while the Gear 2 has one built right into the main watch body instead of the watch. This will make it easy for users to switch the strap for another. Other updates include a heart-rate sensor, music players and an infrared emitter to control your TV. Unlike the first Gear model, the devices run on Tizen, the company's new official operating system.
The privacy-focused Blackphone, which was revealed on Monday, is one of the most secure smartphones ever launched. The device comes from SGP Technologies — a joint venture between secure apps company Silent Circle and Spanish smartphone startup Geeksphone — to give users and businesses a phone focused on privacy and security. The main feature allows users "to control every part of what data their phone is leaking, their calls, their contacts, their web browsing and what any app put on their phone can do," according to Mike Janke, cofounder and CEO of Silent Circle. But it's not exactly NSA-proof: Intelligence agencies looking in on criminals or terrorists will still be able to get into the Blackphone.
