Vacations are precious, often hard-earned moments of sanctuary, worthy of being remembered fondly for years to come.

Naturally, many people use photos to preserve their vacation memories. But when a different Facebook friend gets away every other day, your vacation album can look pretty boring — especially to those who didn't have the pleasure of leaving home.

So before you start snapping away, take a few seconds to refresh yourself with some tips. Otherwise you'll end up with dull pictures of landscapes or photos of your loved ones staged like puppets, awkwardly attempting a forced smile.

Most importantly, remember to put the camera down at some point, it's your vacation too.

1. Take a moment to line up your shot.

Taking an extra minute to set up the perfect shot really pays off.

2. Take a step back, to capture the whole picture.

Don't just take closeups. Take a moment to focus on all the beauty that's around you.

3. Break the rules.

The rule of thirds doesn't always need to apply. Forget the rules, point your camera at the sun or try an angle you wouldn't normally.

4. Don't forget the group shot.

Even when you're family is driving you crazy in the moment, you'll definitely regret not snapping a few shots of everyone in attendance.

5. But focus on individual people too.

Landscapes can be boring, don't forget about the people.

6. Shake things up: Use an object to document the journey.

Bring a toy or stuffed animal, and photograph them in various shots throughout your trip. This is an especially fun alternative to a million selfies when you're traveling solo.

7. Be sure to notice wildlife.

Include all aspects of your trip, especially if there's exotic wildlife.

8. Capture the candid moments.

Avoid staged photos, try and capture things as they're happening. But don't have your face stuck behind a camera or phone the whole time.
