Jason Kilar stepped down from his position as CEO of Hulu in early 2013 after helping to build up the video streaming service from its launch in 2007.
In the second half of 2013, Kilar began working with Hulu's former CTO Richard Tom on a new "consumer-focused" startup based in San Francisco, which he referred to then as The Fremont Project. The pair went on to poach several former colleagues from Hulu for the project.

On Tuesday, Kilar and Tom announced that the new startup would be named Vessel and revealed that it had received an undisclosed amount of funding from Benchmark, Greylock and Bezos Expeditions, the investment firm started by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Kilar had previously worked as an Amazon exec.
The team is still being vague on what exactly the startup does, but hinted that it will also be in the online video space. Previous reports had suggested that Kilar was talking with publishers for a service that would be more focused on magazine and newspapers, but it appears the startup moved away from that plan.
"We've been busy building a service whose mission is to delight consumers and content creators alike," Kilar and Tom wrote in their post. "As a team, we are unusually passionate about the intersection of media and technology; we see an opportunity to improve media, particularly next generation video."
