A parliamentary watchdog Sunday suggested exporting Bangladesh-made condoms after meeting the domestic demand for the contraceptive device. The committee on public undertakings made the recommendations at a meeting after discussing the activities of the state-owned Essential Drugs Company Limited, which produces the contraceptives along with other drugs. Presided over by the committee chairman ABM Golam Mostafa, the meeting was informed that the Essential Latex Plant in Khulna supplied condoms to the domestic market worth about Tk 375 million in the 2011-12 fiscal year. The lawmakers on the panel were also told that the company added two dipping lines for raising production capacity in order to meet the domestic demands for the contraceptives. According to a study conducted by Social Marketing Company (SMC), a private company, the country has a demand of some 8 million condoms per day. The government, under its family planning schemes, supplied 24.2 percent of the contraceptives, which is being procured through international biddings using the donors’ money. The committee members were of the view that “if the local company increased its production capacity, it would be able to export condoms to other countries”.
