Exercise is the key to good health.It has been well proved that exercise is imporatnt for treatemnet and or prevention of over 40 diseases.Inactivity is more harmfull than activity.Previously it had been a teaching that rest is the best treatment. It's a notion largely discarded now a days.Sooner a patient is amublated better is the out come.For example Low back pain is a very common cause of suffering and disability and in the past 15 days' absolute bed rest without even going to bath room and the dining hall was the advice.Disc prolapse is an important cause and if the patient starts putting on weight on the spine the prolapse will worsen. In reality rest do worsen and earlier ambulation helps recovery. A few questions about exercise are answered in the following sectionbr /> Q. who among us should do exercises? Ans: All. Each and every individual should do exercise. The healthy individual should do exercise to stay healthy and the patient should do exercise as a part of treatment. Q.what are the diseases exercise can benefit? Ans. A wide variety of diseases starting from Orthopedic to cardiovascular , diabetes, respiratory, neurologic and many other diseases can benefit from exercise.Exercise is helpful to maintain blood cholesterol to normal level which in turn is useful to diminsh cardiovascular events like coronary heart diseases, stroke or brain attack, maintainig normal blood glucose level thereby management of Diabetes, delaying aging, and overall maintaining fitness of the body. Q. How much exercise should a healthy man do? Ans:-Off course the extent of exericse depends on the aim of the exercise.A minimum requirement for a healthy individual to stay fit is 30 mins walking at vigorous speed for at least 5 days a week. Q.How fast I should walk? Ans:- A good guide is the "Talk test". one should walk at the maximum speed where the individual can talk normally. Q Should I Consult a doctor before i start exercise? Ans:- In general consulting a doctor is not necessary . How ever under certain diseases like heart diseases , diabetes , post stroke and some others it is advisable to consult a physician and assess fitness and various aspects of exercises. Q. What is Aerobic exercise? Ans:- Aerobic has been derived from air. Initially it was thought that this type of exercise involves aerobic metabolism only .in reality it may involve metabolism without oxygen or air. Aerobic exercises involves large groups of muscles from different parts of the body and includes Running, jogging, swimming,bicycling. Most ordinarily what we mean by "Exercise" are examples of Aerobic exercises. Q. what are the various dangers of exercise? Ans: Most exercise is absolutely harmless.However intensity, frequency duration etc may adversely affect health.what should be different parameters of exercises should be set before resorting to any exercise program.Unaccustomed exercise may precipitate Injury to muscles joints bones, tendons ligaments etc.In diseased heart it can invite heart attack if too vigorous exercise is started at the beginning.. Q. What is the safe intensity of exercise? Ans:- Off course an exercise program should be individual.A common guide is the target heart rate. Maximum heart rate can roughly be calculated from the formula:- 220- Age of the individual and the target heart rate is set as percentage of maximum heart rate.It is generally safe to start at 50% of maximum heart rate. The adage is "Start low and go slow". when somebody starts doing exercise starting at low intensity and increasisng the intensity slowly is a wise precaution.To give an example a man of 50 yrs' maximum heart rate is 220-50=170,the target heart rate at the starting should be 50% of maximum ie 85 beats / min.So a man of 50 can start with an exercise program that raises the heart rate to 85 beats / min.
