Icona Pop Feels 'Like James Bond' With Samsung Galaxy Gear Watch

Icona Pop, the Swedish music duo and self-described "nerds" who think gadgets are "sexy," debuted Samsung's new Galaxy Gear smart watch during a performance in New York City on Wednesday, just before the company unveiled the device in Berlin.
Mashable interviewed Icona Pop's Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo to get their initial impressions. They are the first celebrities to publicly wear the Galaxy Gear although, as Samsung's celebrity partners, the duo obviously had nothing bad to say. (For a more nuanced look at the watch, check out our review, in which Mashable Editor-in-Chief Lance Ulanoff calls the Gear "big, bold and challenged.")

"It's so easy to use and you learn it quick," Hjelt told Mashable as she sported the watch inside a hotel conference room.
Jawo agreed, praising its clean look and many apps (which at launch will total 70), such as RunKeeper, Tripit, Evernote, Vivino, eBay and Path: "We feel like James Bond."
The duo wore the Jet Black versions, but the device will also be available Sept. 25 in 149 countries in "Mocha Gray," "Wild Orange," "Oatmeal Beige," "Rose Gold," and "Lime Green." The Galaxy Gear also has a 1.63-inch, 320 x 320 pixel Super AMOLED screen, a 1.9-megapixel camera on the wristband, an 800MHz processor, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage.
"Yes, you have all the things you need. If you get an email, it pops up; you can call," Hjelt added. "It's fun too because you can take pictures and videos. It's a great spy cam."
The duo discussed the everyday uses of the Galaxy Gear, citing the ease with which they can leave their phones in their bags during dinner, opting instead to use the watch less obtrusively.

Most of the instruments Icona Pop uses to create music comes from computers, so the singers said they're thrilled when new technology emerges.
"Everything with a light or buttons, we're there, " Jawo said. "This is like a phone on your wrist and ... it's gorgeous — it's fashion technology. "
Icona Pop's second studio album, This Is ... Icona Pop is expected to arrive on Sept. 24 — one day before the Galaxy Gear hits stores. Lyrically, the album will explore "a lot of heartbreak and breaking hearts." The duo performed their first single, "All Night," during the Samsung event.
Previously, Samsung used Icona Pop's "I Love It" in a commercial for the Samsung Galaxy S4. The duo's music has also been featured in Girls, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, a Coca-Cola Light commercial, Snooki & JWoww and Vampire Diaries.
"We choose wisely, and we benefit because we reach so many people who wouldn't come across our music otherwise," Hjelt explained.
The Samsung Galaxy Gear extends the smartphone experience to a 1.6-inch screen on your wrist. The smart watch has a lot of promise, but it feels like an unpolished device.
The Gear has a 1.6-inch 320 x 320 touchscreen LCD. Menus look crisp, but images weren't the best.
The screen can display four apps at a time. Users will be able to download more Gear apps from a special store.
The home button is on the side -- a wise choice.
The camera is on the strap.
The camera can capture still pictures and video.
You can access some of the basic settings of the camera.
Samsung's S Voice assistant is easily accessible via the Gear.
If S Voice doesn't hear you, you'll see this message.
