Panasonic Plans Living Room Takeover With Facial-Recognition TVs

LAS VEGAS — At the 2014 International CES show in Las Vegas on Monday, Panasonic unveiled a series of new products aimed to ramp up the living room experience, including voice-activated and face-recognition software that brings interactivity to watching TV.
But the company also launched a few unexpected products beyond its core category, including a line of beauty products and wearable cameras.

“We are far more than a TV company,” Julie Bauer, president of Panasonic’s consumer division, told attendees at its press conference.

The company is no longer making plasma TVs and will be focused on LED LCD models. Its AX8000 TV is Panasonic's only 4K product, while the rest of its lineup remains at 1080 p. But perhaps the biggest innovator is its Life+ Screens software that will come to 4K and 1080 p TV models this year. With promises of a “new level of interaction," it features voice-activated and face-recognition technology, an information bar which displays what’s most interesting to each user and remote-sharing capabilities.
While other manufacturers are focused on bringing 4K technology to consumers, Panasonic said it is more focused on bringing it to the business world. Last year, it created massive buzz at CES for its 20-inch tablet intended for businesses, which started shipping in November.
As a part of a greater effort to move beyond technology for the living room, Panasonic also launched a lineup of beauty products, a tablet, a new music service, a Lumix GX7 camera and 4K waterproof camcorder.

Panasonic is calling its new 7-inch FZ-M1 tablet the thinnest and lightest rugged tablet running Windows 8.1 pro. It comes with an Intel Core V processor and is intended for environments such as retail and quick-service restaurants.

It also unveiled a new Panasonic hairdryer, which — despite entering one of the largest consumer markets — received a big laugh from attendees. The device aims to add moisture to your hair.
Panasonic also launched its first 4K professional camera called the 4K Varicam. Its new 4K waterproof camera connects with Wi-Fi and its Lumix camera captures still images and those in motion to bring more creativity into the hands of users.
