FarmLogs Gets $4 Million to Help Modernize Agriculture

Seeing an opportunity in the largely analog world of agriculture, investors have sunk $4 million into FarmLogs, a startup that brings real-time data to farming.
The Series A round, led by Drive Capital, brings FarmLogs' total funding to $5 million. Since launching in 2011, the the Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Y Combinator alum has been adopted in 5% of row-crop farms in the U.S., according to the company.

FarmLogs' software gives farmers data about their crop progress, weather, crop markets and other relevant news. The platform also lets them track their activities and expenses. The idea is to bring big data tools to the profession. There is a mobile component as well: A GPS-enabled mobile app can help farmers record the latest activity in the field.
FarmLogs isn't the only company that's attempting to bring such tools to agriculture. Other startups in the sector include Farmeron, AgSmarts and i-Linc. Ag giant Monsanto also paid nearly $930 million for startup ClimateCorp last October.
