Dark Sky, the Kickstarter-funded weather app focusing on hyperlocal predictions, is getting a major update.
Forecast, the independent weather service that powers Dark Sky, unveiled the completely redesigned iOS app Monday.

The update adds extended forecasts and interactive weather maps to its up-to-the-minute breakdowns of the weather around you.
"Completely rewritten from scratch, it sets aside the limitations of the web to become the weather app we’ve always wanted — and always wanted to build," wrote Adam Grossman, one of the creators of Dark Sky, in a blog post announcing the changes. "It’s the culmination of over two years of work in figuring out how to display and organize weather data the right way."

The biggest change is the addition of extended forecasts. While the previous version focused on the immediate outlook, with information detailing the weather conditions for a 12-hour window, the latest version provides detailed next-day and seven-day forecasts.
"In studying how people use weather apps (ours and others), it’s become clear that the next 24 hours is hugely important," said Grossman. "So much so that we’ve devoted an entire screen to a full breakdown of what’s going to happen in the next day."
The newest version of the app also features new interactive weather maps, which allow users to view global weather patterns in real-time. You can also toggle the animated maps to show predicted weather patterns as far as a week ahead of time.
Dark Sky first launched in 2012 as the result of a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised nearly $40,000. It gained popularity due to its extremely precise short-term predictions and hyper-local focus.
The app is $3.99 and available in the App Store. Though an Android app was originally planned, it looks like Android users may, unfortunately, be out of luck.
