Square Now Lets Users Request Money via Email

Ask and you shall receive.
Mobile payments company Square announced that users of Square Cash, the company's personal payment app, can now use the service to charge individuals or groups through the app or via email. For example, someone collecting money for an upcoming birthday party could send out payment requests to partygoers.

Users can request cash from as many as 25 people at one time, and anyone already signed up on Square Cash can pay off requests with the click of one button. Users who haven't used the app or service before will need to provide debit card information in order to make payments.
The new feature also allows users to request payment through email. Those requesting funds simply carbon copy ("CC") request@square.com and the charge can be completed. iOS or Android users can also check the status of any pending charges through the app.

The new feature helps bolster the company's existing service to general consumers. Since Square unveiled Square Cash in October, users have sent "millions" of dollars to each other each week, according to the company's blog post. Square will be a company under the microscope in 2014, as many believe the company will seek an IPO.
If that is indeed the case, consumer features like Square Cash and Square Wallet, an app that allows users to pay through their smartphones in retail stores, should help boost the company's status in front of investors.
Money management apps are common among smartphone users, and it makes sense Square would join the fight. Personal finance app Mint helps users manage their budget from their phone, and Venmo, which Mashable named one its 10 best iPhone apps in 2013", already offered many of the features included in Square's update from Thursday.
Square's update is now live for iOS and Android users, and the email functionality started Thursday morning. Square Cash is still only available to U.S. users, but the company is "always exploring other ways to bring Square Cash to more customers," a spokesperson told Mashable.
