Pope Francis to Cardinals: Reject Gossip, Favoritism

So much for papal-palace intrigue.
Pope Francis targeted some of the highest-ranking members of the Catholic church in his homily at St. Peter's Basilica on Sunday, saying cardinals need to reject "intrigue, gossip, power pacts, favoritism," according to the Associated Press.

He added that bishops and the 19 new cardinals, who were awarded the title on Saturday, should strive to be good servants of the people.
The statements align with the progressive tone that Pope Francis struck in his first year as head of the church. He has publicly called for the church and its followers to serve the poor, and change its focus from topics such as abortion and same-sex marriage.
Pope Francis has also been a crusader for change within the church, according to reports. From his clothing to living quarters, the pope has reportedly rejected some of the pomp and opulence associated with his position.
Earlier this year, he fired four of the top officials at the scandal-plagued Vatican bank, and removed two of the most conservative bishops in the U.S.
Pope Francis' exploits have been closely monitored by the press, which has found no shortage of compelling stories. He reportedly sneaks out at night to help the homeless.
The attention and praise that Pope Francis has received for his actions earned him the title of Time's Man of the Year.
