BuzzFeed Teams Up With Ex-Gawker Traffic Guru at Whisper

BuzzFeed has reached a content-sharing agreement with Whisper, an anonymous social network where former Gawker traffic guru Neetzan Zimmerman is now editor-in-chief.

Zimmerman and another Whisper employee will work with BuzzFeed writers to identify content that fits with certain themes and help produce posts.

Zimmerman, who joined Whisper in January, downplayed initial reports that a group of BuzzFeed writers would be dedicated to search Whisper for stories.

"At BuzzFeed, the people will be working ad hoc. When something occurs to them, they'll reach out to the special projects manager, and the special projects manager works with me on creating materials for BuzzFeed aligning with their needs and so forth," Zimmerman told Mashable.

The partnership, which does not include any compensation, has already produced posts such as "19 brutally Honest Teacher Confessions," which features a series of embedded Whisper pictures. The post has already garnered more than 1.1 million views.

Whisper is an anonymous social app in which users can post messages superimposed over pictures.

The relationship will flow both ways, Zimmerman said, with Whisper alerting BuzzFeed to trends it's seeing, and BuzzFeed going to Whisper with requests to look into ideas.

"They have certain themes that they reworking with whether it's current events or something to do with an evergreen topic like parenting or college," Zimmerman said. "Then they reach out to us and say 'We're working on something. Do you have any content that matches this theme?' And then we work with them to generate something that matches what they're looking for."

The rivalry between BuzzFeed and Gawker intensified recently when Nick Denton, founder of Gawker, called BuzzFeed "pointless" and added the it was a plausible rival.

"It's a meaningful fight, because Gawker Media and BuzzFeed represent two very different forces struggling for the soul of Internet media," Denton said.

The anonymity of Whisper has led to some people wondering whether it should be used as a source for posts, since users are not required to substantiate any claims. Zimmerman said that the social network is working hard to enforce guidelines on what people post.

"Just as I cared about authenticity at Gawker, I carry that with me wherever I go," he said.
