Destruction of Minority Civilization :Identity of New Media Consumers

`It bewilders me, frustrates me, saddens me, but more than anything, it angers me’ (Preetha: 2012). I am very much sure, I am not the first person talking about the recent ‘RAMU VANDALISM INNCIDENT’, which might be marked as `talk of the time’, and not only in mainstreams but also in the new media blog sphere. To be honest, I took time to realize the development of the story, and to some extend, I have analyzed the coverage which made me late raising my voice regarding the same aspect in new media. As a Chittagonian, I have visited the Buddhist temples in RAMU (the place where the incident has happened) quite a lot of times. My surroundings and inquisitive mind did help me understanding the Buddhist culture and their religious values. At the same time, as a student of mass communication and journalism, I have been taught how to examine the news from different aspects. As a university going student, and a conscious observer of daily events, I have come into the decision regarding this incident that- this no matter which party is in power; to some extent, the big two parties’ manners are almost same towards the minorities. Exploitation of our minorities is neither a new concept nor recent practice. As a consumer of new media, particularly facebook.com and somewhereinblog.net, I have noticed how the bloggers reacted and toke a marginal stand in this incident. It did not astonish me, but more than anything, I became surprise to see- how the consumers separated into two groups. We noticed, a wide-ranging common audience did bump up their voice against this communal riot and showed their sympathy towards the Buddhist minority all the way through putting their status, picture, notes and others. On the other hand, a few (they are not a few, rather are invisible) bloggers did support this vandalism `indirectly’ only to safe their Muslim brothers, who meticulously executed this riot. To some extent, many of us believe- these people (invisible political Islamist) are little bit sympathized for the minority people and less curious about the destruction of an ancient civilization. According to this Political Islamists, this is not much important for them of nurturing a Buddhist culture in Bangladesh, rather this is their political duty of fostering the Islamic culture and prejudice over the years, though they talk about the peaceful coexistence of ethnic groups in our motherland. Each and every time, they are busy pointing fingers towards political conspiracy. Moreover, this group never came with a single solution during the crisis moment. The secular bloggers create a center of attention all the way through putting words in the blog based on the historical background of the Muslim empires in this land, particularly the destructiveness of the Muslim emperors like ` BOKTIYAR KHALJI’ `MAHMUD GAJNI’ and others, who destructed a huge number of civilizations in ancient India. The devastation of Buddhist civilization in Afghanistan by the Muslim Islamic activists and others has been mentioned in their notes. On the other hand, the invisible Islamic communal bloggers get annoyed with these notes and come with different opinions to protect their religion. Sometimes these two groups are being occupied in a conflict virtually. So, it seems, this is no matter what happening around the country, especially about the communal riots and vandalism against ethnic minority; to a certain extent the new media blogging-space has been using by some of the fundamentalist bloggers, who have already got divided into different groups, fostering extreme ideologies and attacking each other in this regard. I have been asked about the potentialities of new media and blog-sphere so many times. Unfortunately, my opinion is almost accurate. I did say straightly - `the uses of new media is not bringing any fruitful solution in my country, especially regarding the national crisis issues, rather the new media bog-sphere has become a common platform of recreation. Bloggers have been divided into AL Vs BNP, religious Vs secular, nationalist Vs fundamentalist, theist Vs atheist and so on. Finally, I think, this is really a big deal for the ruling party as the question has already come into light - How can it be in a state that claims to be secular, our minorities are subjected to such atrocious and malicious acts of violence?
