Teacher Evaluation System: Myth or Reality?

When we talk about lots of problems in our Education system, teacher evaluation system frequently comes to our discussion. But it is very much taunt – though we are serious in discussion about teachers’ evaluation till now it is like a myth in our education system. Teacher evaluation system is very influential matter in education system. Modern education system indicates it as an important factor for the total development in education. According to modern education policy, teachers are not only supposed to teach the students, but also facilitate them. Students will learn spontaneously. The duty of teachers is to develop and enhance students learning will, to find out in most progressive way. Teachers will teach their students maintaining these facts. So, today teachers are called facilitator. The relationship between teachers and students are supposed to be very much friendly. Moreover, there are two types of learner groups considered in modern education system- Senior Learner and Junior Learner. Teachers are considered as senior learner, as well as, students are considered as junior learner. Evaluation is very much important for learning process in modern education. It is really nice that modern education system refers students are not only supposed to be evaluated, but also teachers will be included in this evaluation process as both of them considered as learners. Most of the modern countries follow this both-sided evaluation process in their education process. They include this teacher evaluation system in their national curriculum. But, it’s really despairing Bangladesh is for behind in this fact though our policy makers in national education system are well known about this teachers evaluation concept. So, a question easily comes forward to us – what is the problem to activate this much desired “teacher evaluation system”? Actually, no single cause is responsible for this problem. There are some specific reasons that deny activating this teacher evaluation system and making it problematic. I am going to discuss about it now- In priority basis, the first problem against this system is our backdated culture and cultural practice in our teaching – learning process. Most of the people of our society believe teachers only as a medium of teaching process. Teachers will teach, students will learn. Teacher- student relationship is very much consumed by superiority-inferiority complex. Even, most of teachers are not used to making better relationship with their students. This bad backdated culture spreads out generation to generation. Most of our teacher think only they have rights to order and insist students in every sense to make them learning quickly. But it is not granted process in modern education system. Teacher-student relationship should be friendly. Teachers and students both will co-operate each other in terms of teaching-learning process. Today, it is regarded in modern education system, teachers are senior learner. So, teachers should not teach the students only, they will also accept students’ new and positive thinking. They will share information and knowledge. But we could not see it happening in Bangladesh. For the backdated cultural practice, most of our teachers think only they have right to evaluate students, they don’t need to be evaluated as they are superior. So, to activate teacher evaluation in our education system, at first, we need to take steps to change our teachers’ cultural practice and motivate them to the co-operative teaching-learning process. Teachers’ inefficiency is another problem against their education process. Today, it is seen everywhere in education sector that most of our teachers are not efficient in teaching. Most of them don’t know the modern teaching process. They are not properly trained too. Some of them are very good students in their result, but not efficient in teaching. They lack knowledge how to teach students, keep their attentions in classroom and draw out their possibility. For this reason, most of the time, learning is too boring to the students in our country. If teacher evaluation process could run, they might be unfit for teaching or obliged to correct their teaching method for their own sake. To hide their inefficiency and incapability, most of those teachers are against this teacher evaluation system. Corruption in teaching profession is also a big factor against this teacher evaluation system. Our teaching sector is now highly corrupted. Many of our teachers and education professionals are highly corrupted in various ways. Many teachers are taking this profession as other normal profession. They find out their profit in this sector too like other profitable business. They just run toward money and fame. But teaching profession is quite different than other professions. Passion and patience are very important for this profession. But, many of our teachers lack these two qualities. Same words go for the other education professionals. They are much interested to teach and council other educational institutions and organizations for their own profit instead of their main educational work in right and liable place. Besides this, the appointment system in teaching profession is also too much corrupted. The personnel responsible for taking appointment and giving these educational jobs to the candidates fall in biasness most of the time. It seems they choose and appoint newbies depending on their personal relations and interests with the candidates too. At this and other various ways, teaching professions are being corrupted day by day in our country and many teachers play stupid role in these types of corruptions. As a result, those corrupted teachers are seriously against in this teacher evaluation process for their own reason, because this evaluation will reveal the truth and will mark those teachers directly to the people. Teacher evaluation system could strike to the roots of these corruptions in education system. Another reason against this evaluation process is highly engagement of teachers to the national politics and unethical political disturbance in this profession. Teachers could have definite political views. They have that right as a part of nation. But teachers should not engage themselves into the national politics directly in time of their teaching professions. It seriously hampers their way of profession. In our country, teachers are not conscious of this fact. Most of them are seriously engaged with different national parties and try to enforce their own views to the students in classroom and others. It is seriously unethical for the teachers. To sustain their political lobbing and power, teachers then easily deny their responsibilities. So then, they fear to be evaluated. They go easily against the evaluation system. Besides these, there are also some factors that hinder to activate this teacher evaluation system. But it is fact that today there is no other option but to run teacher evaluation system for the betterment of our education sector. To run this evaluation system, some initiatives are very much need today- *** The culture of teaching-learning process must have to be updated and scientific matching with modern education philosophy. *** Efficiency of teachers must have to be ensured. If need, government should have planned and organized proper training for the newbie teachers as they be efficient and be able to facilitate their students according to their expectations. *** Corruption in teachers’ recruitment must have to ban in education sector. If need, government will make laws against corruption in education sector and will imply those laws properly. *** Political involvement in teaching and teachers’ recruitment process must have to dismay. *** A large scale public awareness among people, specially, people related to education sector such as students, teachers, education professionals, education ministry should have to grow in support of teacher evaluation process. So, it is confirmed now that all we have to be determined to resolve the problems behind teacher evaluation system and drive seriously in this issue. Mass student organizations should play important role in this fact. Only that time we could dream of the possibility about this teacher evaluation system.
