খুব ছোট করে বিবরন ও এর পেছনের গল্প ... Who was the mastermind? Was it Faruque Rahman or Rahsid? Faruque Rahman was the commander of the coup. His job was finished as soon as the killing mission was done. Rashid was the person that did the reorganization and coordination after the killing. Rashid was the one who selected the new president and even brought him to Bangabhaban. Who were behind it? Was it a consequence of personal malice and an act out of fury of some army officers? Faruque and Rashid said in couple of interviews "How would we dare undertake such an impossible project if we weren’t backed by the big brothers?" Several investigative reports clearly suggested that Khandaker Moshtaque and a quarter of US embassy officials in Dhaka were closely involved with the small section of army officers in the coup. Relations between the US and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman were strained because of the Nixon administration’s close ties to Pakistan generally, and during the Liberation War, 1971. Why was not 46 Infantry Brigade considered as a threat is a mystery. Shafayat Zamil was the commander then. Rakkhi Bahini did not move because they were surrounded by the tank division. The tanks however had no ammunition! No case was registered with the police. Relatives, party men and close ones of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman remained numbed. Direct beneficiary of the killing After the assassination, Khondaker Mustaq Ahmed assumed the presidency; Major General Ziaur Rahman became the new Chief of Army Staff and Deputy Chief Martial Law administrator. He latr became the president of the country. The U.S. also was beneficiary as the killing of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman prevented Bangladesh from being a socialist country. The constant ‘balancing third player’ Bangladesh Army, as an institution did not conspire the 15 August coup, the killing of Bangabandu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and overthrowing of the government. It was done by a small group of derailed officers in collaboration with a few powerful politicians and foreign diplomats. The Army, however, decided not to court-martial the officials who masterminded and participated in the coup. An earlier attempt WikiLeaks recently published a report saying Sheikh Mujib survived a killing attempt in May 1975. According to the cable, the Bangladeshi press was under government orders not to report it. “We have received two reports that President Mujibur Rahman was target of assassination attempt on evening of May 21,” the cable, sent on May 23, 1975, noted. “Attempt occurred as Mujib was returning to his residence after visiting new TV station on outskirts of Dacca.” The report further mentioned that grenades were used in the failed attempt. Bringing the killers into the court: In the mid-1980s, one of two Sheikh Mujib daughters who were in Germany at the time of the massacre would return to Bangladesh to assume her father’s political legacy. Sheikh Hasina won an election in 1996 and became prime minister, an office she holds today. One of her first orders in office was to track down the killers and bring them to trial. In January 2010, after 13 years of trials and appeals, the first five accused went to the gallows. Six are still hiding overseas.
