Preparation is the key to success
The third most important characteristics of good teachers is to be fully prepared. Good preparation is a prerequisite for demonstrating perseverance and determination. There is a saying that ‘to be prepared is half the victory’. Good teachers plan ahead as the best preparation for tomorrow is to do the best today. The secret to any success is to be well prepared. Good teachers never wait until the last minute because they know that the best time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.
Contrary to common perception, talent alone does not bring success. Even if a person is in the right place at the right time, they can only be successful if they are ready. Good teachers do not wait for opportunities – they create them. They match opportunity with preparation that leads to success. They are never afraid of making mistakes as it allows them to discover ways in which to become more effective.
Good teachers have a detailed outline of what they want to teach their children over a week or a term. They prepare a weekly plan and make annotated notes to ensure that similar pitfalls are avoided in the future. Good teachers allocate time to prepare, evaluate and analyse as routine.
Excellent teaching skills
Another essential characteristic of good teachers is to acquire and maintain excellent teaching skills. Teachers are not usually born with teaching skills and attributes – they acquire and refine them. Teachers cannot be as effective unless they possess advanced teaching skills like skilled craftsmen are often useless without appropriate tools. The skills needed for effective teaching varies and changes with time. However, certain aspects are generic and apply to most settings. For example, the ability to explain the things taught clearly and asking helpful, probing questions that allows children to move forward. It is easy to praise children who get things right - good teachers develop natural qualities to support those who are hesitant and easily distracted. They are not frightened to admit mistakes and take ownership of difficult decisions.
Good teachers are very skilful at observing other good teachers and emulating their good behaviour. One of the most fascinating things about good teachers is that they are bold and have strong pride in their work without a hint of arrogance or superiority over others. Good teachers are determined and do not allow power and position to affect their work. I know a number of headteachers who have been mistaken for being the cleaner in their own school.
