Bangladesh wishes firm stand with India to ensure Win-Win

In the midst of high expectation, both constructive and pessimistic over Prime Minister Sk. Hasina’s visit to Delhi (Jan.10-13) resulted reorientation of relationship between two historical countries, it is time to take a positive look at the ‘many-sided’ India-Bangladesh relationships. Most of the Bangladeshi’s are observant about the connection between two countries. It is unfortunate and in bad taste, that a small part of the pro-Indian media misleading both people. This kind of reporting is well-planned strategy of the syndicate that controls the media. The print media has a larger circulation among the common people and producing a negative image of Islam by the name of “spirit of secularism”. During “4 party coalition” rule- India hoisted up few susceptible claim against Bangladesh that included “alliance with Pakistan’s ISI to launch terrorist attacks on India from the Bangladeshi soil, harboring and aiding Indian insurgents like the ULFA, NSCN (I/M) and the Manipur and Bodo groups, helping Islamic terrorist to take roots in Bangladesh, a Bangladesh-Pakistan-China intelligence co-operation against India”. India was very much watchful during the “4 party coalition” rule. Indian philosophy was - India would “go slow” and “hope” Bangladesh would keep away from “anti Indian elements”. It would be a mistake to underestimate the opposition in Bangladesh. Although; the BNP and BJI, were almost wiped out in the last general elections held in 2008. The votes polled suggest they have significant support spread over the country. Seats won and supports polled are two different things. The latter signifies the basic strength of a political group or ideology. Both India and the Bangladesh government should be mindful of this observed statistics. In context of the geographical pattern of India and Bangladesh, it is ultimately inevitable for India to ensure positive co-existence between the two countries. Unconditional love or intuitive hatred or both, proved detrimental for relations between two countries. Most imperative is mutual respect. There is need to identify mutual interests and equality in the interest of democracy, peace, stability and development. On return from India, Prime Minister Sk. Hasina emphasized that the visit, and the agreements and MOU's were a “100 percent success”. Her opposition called the visit “a total failure, miserable surrender to India, and threatening the security and sovereignty of the country”. The Bangladeshi opposition has exposed itself as a myopic section, who never finds any positive things with India. Bangladesh must have its own international relationship for all round development. Independence, development, and security must be upper most in its calculations. Climate change can be one of its worst enemies, and it will need strong assistance from the international community and its neighbors. Of course, Bangladesh must evaluate its core interests and values, not be delirious about a particular neighbor, and act upon broad relations with countries of interest. The US and European Union form one quadrant, Russia and Central Asian countries another, and the Islamic countries as a third.
