Acne is a contagion of the skin, initiated by changes in the sebaceous glands. Acne formed when the body begins to over produce both oil and cells located within the sebaceous follicles. Overproduction leads to clogging, and clogging encourages bacteria growth which then creates irritation. Sulfur acne is the oldest treatment for acne.
Sulfur has been used since ancient times for treatment of acne. Some of even famous rulers have used sulfur acne treatment. Sulfur is named as brimstone in bible; it is the fourth largest mineral on the basis of composition in our body In fact approximately 0.25 percent of our body contains sulfur. It is a natural element, and has an aroma that is quite distinctive. The scent of rotten eggs comes to mind. Fortunately, most of today's products don't smell that bad. Sulfur is a keratolytic agent, which means that sulfur encourages the release of dead skin cells. In doing so, the sulfur based treatment diminish acne symptoms. It is also believed that the compounds found within sulfur abate the growth of bacteria by reducing the production of acid they require in order to thrive.
There are a variety of sulfur based acne products such a topical creams and sulfur soaps which can be used to treat acne. Dead Sea salts are also very high in sulfur and therefore are an excellent option when treating body acne. In addition, a bath in Dead Sea salts can provide the significant benefit of sulfur as well as 21 other essential minerals, without the intoxicating smell of sulfur. Common topical medications involving Sulfur are: Sulpho-Lac Acne Medication, Liquimat, Therac Lotion and Sulmasque, Sulfur with Benzoyl peroxide (Dryox 10S, Dryox 20S 10, Sulfoxyl) and Combinations of Sulfur and Resorcinol (Sulforcin Lotion, Rezamid Lotion, and Acnomel Cream).
The results of sulfur acne treatment may not be immediately visible. In fact sometimes it may even take months to get the desired result. Use of sulfur may not be beneficial to all the persons. Some persons are allergic to Sulfur and cannot stand its touch on their skin. Possible side effects of Sulfur acne treatment are drying, peeling; redness, burning, and skin irritation. They tend to be worse when you first begin treatment. You may want to start slowly, and build up to the recommended dose. Topical sulfur rarely causes serious problems. If your skin is uncomfortably dry and irritated, scale back on your usage for a period of time
Sulfur cannot treat severe and moderate acne. Excessive reliance on Sulfur for treating acne when no results are being noticed can sometime proves counterproductive. Excessive use of Sulfur along with Benzoyl peroxide can sometimes lead to drying on skin. But the most important point to remember is any of the treatment associated with acne treatment is to have patience. The response is evident after weeks and sometime even after months. But after the treatment is over, the patient must stick to a regular regimen
